Old Family cures and superstitions

Apparently, when I was six I was very ill. I was nauseous, had a high fever, and cried constantly. This lasted for a few days, then one day my great-gramma takes me aside and laid me down on the floor. She takes an egg and rocks it back and forth over my body for about 10-15 minutes. Fresh chicken egg mind you, since we had a coop in our backyard.

Usually, I'd throw a fit because I didn't like staying still for very long, but she was my grammy and I obeyed whatever she wished (may she rest in peace). When she was done, She took the egg and cracked it, looked at the yolk, and threw the egg away. Then, she said a prayer then took me to my room and told me to sleep. When I awoke, I was fine.

When I asked grammy how did she know what to do, she said it was because she had done it a few times. She said someone cast the 'Evil Eye' upon me.

I don't believe in the evil eye, but I can't explain how I got better after she did her little ritual.

Weird huh? Anyone care to share?

There's also the psychological part. If you think you'll get well, your body will. I'm afraid my family has no traditional cures because I don't know. If I got sick, I just stay in bed and rest like modern medicine practitioners suggest.

Well, that can't be avoided, since your grandma was born years ago and superstitions were often widespread. I wish there was a traditional cure within my family involving chocolate wafers as a cure.

When I was little I had a bad case of the hiccups. My mother fed me a spoon full of sugar and they went a way instantly. To this day, it has worked every single time I have done it.

Lucky for me, I love sugar. I have never tried honey. You should try the sugar thing though. It works every time for me.

Well that sounds interesting enough, but I believe it. I mean if she had done it before then there should be no reason for you not to believe in it. But that is just me I only say that cause something like that happened to me when I was little also and I recovered

Hah @ the first bit of this. As to the second, my grandmother put vinegar in my ear when I had an ear infection once (to my recollection it's the only ear infection I ever had, too) - maybe that actually DOES work?

As far as superstitions: When passing a graveyard we all hold our breath. I don't know why, we've just always done it. Once we're past, big exhales for everyone.

My family does a lot of crazy things that don't go with traditional modern sense at all.
I think it's both something physical and mental that these family traditions work.

My parents once told me never to stay out til the witching hour. You might bring home or encounter something evil.

hmm...i have family superstitions...most of them are because of grandma. she put silly superstions like
-not to wear black on saturday or to buy black on saturday
-not to stay awake till 12:00 or beyond that cuz ghosts wil roam around at that time O.0
-not to walk over a grave or coffin

.....unfortunately. i am a huge 'black' fan. and my family wont allow me to buy black chothes *sigh* stupid weirdos...

Doc leaves curing nettle stings. I thing this one is more psychological too. If you believe it stops hurting it starts to hurt less.
