What exactly is hentai anyway? I know it means perverted in Japanese, but is hentai just any anime that is perverted or what? Because I wouldn't consider that porn, it's just characters being perverted, as are people in real life sometimes.
This really isn't a very good definition of porn. If there's a character shoplifting and you get sexually aroused is it porn? Haruhi Suzumadjdalkda is supposed to an extent give you that feel but is porno?Originally Posted by alextchon

Also we are talking about if hentai is porn. Correct me if im wrong but isn't hentai (pervert) images or animations (japanese style) of explicit sexual content? I don't think shoplifting or suzumiya haruhi (anime) has to do with it.
I was thinking the same thing. It takes artistic talent to draw so while it may be porn, it is also art.

Hentai does mean perverted, but today, people sees hentai as porn, because of the social changes. It depends on how YOU look at it, just as I said earlier, because some people might look at a picture that is so much like porn as art, and some that look at a picture of a girl just flashing is porn. People look at stuff differently.

It really depends on the Hentai. Some are simply made to make the viewer horny. But its all about the viewer's opinion. The same thing could be said about actual porn. Amazingly, some porns and hentai's actually have decent story's and simply include explicit sex.
The term "Erotic Art" mean anything to you?
I feel that "art" is defined by the amount of effort put in. I'm not an artist I can draw. Not the same.
But putting effort into the image of explicit sex, that does make it art. The characters often have equal or greater, (often times greater) depth to them as they do in non-hentai anime and comics. So they shouldn't be looked at as less just because the author aknoledges that they have genitals.
Normally it's pr0n. But some particular "hentai" manga may be considered as art(though thoroughly disgusting). Take Hell Season for an example. It is hentai, but it is also art(with such fine details and anatomy structures).

It's technically both to me. Anything drawn/created from artistic skills is considered art but hentai is used for "getting off."

That actually depends on which type your watching.
Hentai is a form of art which compliments pornographic images, showing fictional characters in an explicit manner. It is obviously both art and pornography.
That which is; is the truth.
Is porn not a subset of art? It's a construct of man, created for enjoyment. Hell, you can use the words interchangeably in virtually any context and be using them correctly. Getting down to it, porn is just a type of art whose gratification is more sexual in nature.

I would say both. As even though it is pornographic it consists of art because it's animated. So basically it is an art in the form of porn.

Not at all. Hentai is animated porn, and it is called "hentai" `2because `0it is porn. Hentai is, intristically, porn. If you're watching something and it's primary purpose is not to display sex, it isn't hentai.
Take Berserk for instance. Occasional depiction of sexual acts. But that is not itss focus. So while we would call it "adult", it is not called "hentai".
Now take Bible Black. It's purpose is to display sexual acts. That is its focus. We call that "hentai" (as well as "adult", I suppose).

You can't really say that hentai isn't art, because anything can be art depending on the person. Their was a guy who used to poop on paper and spread it around and sell it as art. So it just depends on the person. If a person considers it artistic than it is art to that person, but hentai is most defiantly porn. So depending on the person it could be considered art, but with out a doubt it is porn.
