I've been thinking about buying a PS2 to relive some of the classics. The question is do I buy a PS3 now or do I go play a buttload of PS2 games then buy the PS3 or just buy the PS3?
I did the mistake of buying an Xbox.

YES SO MUCH WORTH IT
or better yet 360 or PS3
Since the PS3 has dropped backward compatibility, yes!
Better yet, get an X360, for only $199 and there are plenty of excellent titles.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

Buy both. =)
That's not necessarily true. The XBox suffered from major issues between Microsoft and nVidia. nVidia stopped producing the GPUs for the XBox, Microsoft had nothing to do but move the launch of the X360 forward and kill the XBox.
This is not the case with Sony regarding the PS2, since it was developed in house and they had complete control of what goes in.
If you are into JRPGs you should get an X360, plenty of them are X360 exclusive. Even if you are not, most titles this gen are multi-platform. $199 for the X360 leaves you with a lot of cash to spend on games and accessories.
X360 games

He was talking software.
Not really. 360 has a bunch of exclusive JRPGs that suck and Blue Dragon. At least PS3 has Valkeria Chronicles. If you are into JRPGs you should get an X360, plenty of them are X360 exclusive. Even if you are not, most titles this gen are multi-platform.
Frankly, PS3 has a lot of GotY games on it's exclusive list that actually push the boundaries of their genres. 360 has Yet Another Tired Sci-Fi FPS and Viva Piñata.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

I thought Lost Odyssey was good, so is Last Remnant and Star Ocean 4.
Blue Dragon 2 is supposedly in the initial design phase and destined for the X360, and Atlus announced that it is cooking something for the X360. I'm big on Atlus, most of my JRPGs (that's all I play) on the PS2 are by Atlus.
I'm not big on Tales of, the last I truly enjoyed was Tales of Eternia on PS1, but I know a plenty who love Tales of Vesperia and it did move plenty of X360s in Japan.
Add to that all multiplat games and $199 and it is hard to hate the X360, even if you are a MSFT, Windows and IE hater.

Just to throw in my two cents, as a seasoned employee of a game store... It is nearly impossible to find a 20GB, 60GB, or original/MGS4 80GB PS3 in stores. People know these things are backwards compatible, and just sell them on eBay and Craigslist, for quite a bit more than what the original price was.
Even Game Stop sells the backwards compatible PS3s for near/more than the price of the current 80GB or 160GB out. They're very rare, and people want one.
Good luck!
Sell the Xbox, then slap yourself for buying one. then buy PS3, that way you can play PS2/3 games. done

Producing games for the previous system? That's usually how it goes, unless the previous system was insanely popular (ps2) Games for the cube pretty much came to a screeching halt once the wii was launched, so it's hardly an "american system" thing.
Anyway, it's a ps2, it's worth it.
A MaruDashi Creation
why not get a ps3 so you can play ps3 and ps2 games?
or better yet buy a xbox 360

so apparently nobody within the last 5 posts realizes that the recent ps3s (80gb, i dont think they sell the 40s anymore) are not backwards compatible. read up on your info first, people. so sir, basically, if you want to play ps2 games on a ps3, like a few other people said, you'd have to hunt on ebay or the such for a rediculously overpriced 20-60gb ps3 ( i wasnt aware that the MGS4 bundle came with backwards compatibility....and i know someone with one too. mabey ill ask em about it!) so youd be forced into buying both. im sorry to say it, but its tru. although you can probably get a used ps2 cheep from your local gamestop/EBgames/Funcoland (YES, THEY STILL EXIST!!) and they have so many of them, that on of them is bound to actually work! and i agree, slap yourself for buying an xbox, im too tired to do it myself. and if your thinking 'oh but what about the memory of the ps3, should i consider that?' yea, the higher the gb count, the higher the price; but guess what? YOU CAN INCREASE THE HARD DRIVE YOURSELF!! a ps3 hard drive is literally the same as any laptops, and is almost just as easy to remove and replace. so that really shouldnt matter. hope i could have been of some help!

ps2 is worth buying since alot of good games came out beside ps3 has hardly games coming out for it yet but it's up to you what you want to buy
I ended up buying the PS2 with a buttload of cheap games. They didn't have some of the games I looked forward to buying.
Now the if Kishiro doesn't mind me adding a second question, what games are the best for a PS2?
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

I'll go through my case, then, eliminating any games that got ported to X-Box. And maybe add a few I've played in the past.
Persona/Shin Megami Tensai
Dark Cloud 2
Katamri Damacy/We Love Katamri
Graffiti Kingdom (You can draw things with the sticks and it will do a pretty good job of turning it into a correctly animated hellspawn or schoolgirl or whatever, which is a game in and of itself)
ICO (or die in a fire)
Deus Ex: The Conspiracy (assuming you haven't played it on PC)
Culdecept (assuming you can find people and force them to play it with you)
God of War
Disgaea
Ratchet and Clank (I don't like them, but everyone else seems to)
Jak and Daxter (maybe not the sequels, I gave up halfway though the second)
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

the jak and daxter sequels were pretty good, if you can manage through some of the more laborous quests, and the rachet and clank series is also a pretty good one as well. might add:
Okami (for those who REALLY REALLY enjoy art with their awsomeness)
along with ICO, you gotta play Shadow of the Colossus (ive been saying this alot to people recently)
people don't believe me, but the original Killzone wasn't half bad....
even though you said you dont like driving games, you shouldd at least try one of the Burnout games (3 or Revenge are recomended)
Parrapa the Rappper 2....(or mabey i just like this game)
any of the devil may cry games (but just be warned that since 2 is super easy, 3 is over the top difficult.)
Tekken Tag-5 (5 is my personal fave)
chaos legion, though not as renown as the DMC franchise, was actually a pretty fun game.
either of the kingdom hearts games (that goes without saying) but do not get KH RE: chain of memories.
theres Beyond Good and Evil
Resident Evil 4
um...thats all i can think of for now, sorry
"it IS the key to the greatest treasure in all the land!"
Every Xenosaga, Wild ARMs, Shin Megami Tensei, Suikoden, Growlanser, Disgaea, Altier Iris and Dragon Quest title on the PS2 is doubleplusgood.
tales of the abyss/legendia,.hack//g.u.,final fantasy x/x-2,ff12,silent hill 3 and 4
Get the PS2 and games. It is way cheaper and you still get amazing quality. I still have mine from '02 so its a keeper and durable. I cant tell you how many times I hit mine cause it cheats XD. No its worth it.
This game should not be played on a console. It is and remains a PC game, and any console adaptation will either gut it of crucial atmosphere and gameplay, or be really difficult to play due to obviously PC-esque gameplay (there is a fair amount of text-reading that really adds to the gameplay in DX, for an instance). Besides, it's from 2000, so computer performance can not be an issue.
Hey look, Japan made a movie about me!
