I'm reading a manga and I've come across a line I can't quite make sense of. It's probably something really obvious that I'll feel like an idiot for not getting, and anyway I doubt I'd lose much by ignoring it and moving on, but it's bothering me, so...

Character A complains that Character B always leaves early from their afterschool chores. Character B says she can't help it, and anyway, she asked the teacher about it personally ("先生直々頼まれたんだし"). Character C says "You really like the teacher, don't you?" ("本当に先生が好きなのですね"), whereupon B blushes and flails and says "この学園でまともなのって校長先生と先生くらいだし."

The only thing I can come up with for that is "at this school, the principal is about the same as a teacher," but that's a total non-sequitur, so I doubt it can be right.
