Why do they call it black friday??
I know the reason why now! XD Thank you all!!

Anyways. Any of you have this in your country/state?

If you dont know what Black Friday is... its basically a big sale after thanks-giving where people stand in line for the store to open just to get stuff they want/Christmas list.

I dont really know if all of you have this... but if you do... do you plan to go? What's your list?

I'm debating either to follow my friend and his family to go on the other side of the island to shop at that 24 hour mall... and then go to the other side of the island to another mall and stand in line....

OR....

I can just wake up very early in the morning and catch the bus with my boyfriend to the closest mall and stand in line.

My list is getting me a Mario Kart DS, a crimson DS, clothes from Hot Topic, A pair of boots, Skull Candy, and an I-pod nano.
I kinda wish not to go to the second option... because if I do... then I cant really be in two places at once... and its hard knowing that I'm skinny and not athletic.... I cant run to the other side of the mall and yea...

It's called Black Friday because of the rampage of bargain demanding brain dead morons that rampage stores because they need to make up for the rampant consuming they didn't get to complete because it was a public holiday.

Slowest (or second slowest, Day after Xmas is bad too) day for Grocery Retail*. I have a nine hour shift. I'm going to spend most of it looking for a cliff to jump off of, assuming I don' get sent home early for lack of work to do.

*- People don't have to work, so no lunch or after work rush. They have plenty of leftovers from Thanksgiving so they don't need stuff for dinner, and even if they did they spend most of the day in malls/shopping centers so they get fast food there. It's like a perfect storm of slowness.

Black Friday is just another normal day for me, and I have no fear of it. Just a history that gives people an idea of a day of bad luck. I remembered eating chicken on black Friday.

Given that I work in entertainment I don't see the date affecting my work much, except for maybe LESS business since everyone would be out shopping instead of playing lasertag.

Though I hear whispers and murmurs of this upcoming Black Friday to be rather lackluster due to the recession, despite many stores offering more bargains and sales than ever.

It's called "Black Friday" because it's the day when a lot of stores go from being "in the red" to "in the black". It's the single biggest retail shopping day of the year in America as people who have the day off head out to start their Christmas shopping.

It's sort of evolved into a mini holiday however as stores compete with one another to draw crowds.

Many stores are selling items at prices that I bet are below costs with the purpose of getting people inside. The idea being that once inside to buy that super cheap external hard drive for themselves people will then buy some other stuff for others for Christmas so the store ends up profiting in the end.

Also there are many "doorbuster" sales where there are extra discounts in the morning (or super cheap items that will be gone by 9am). I think the idea is to balance the load instead of being swarmed in the traditional peak shopping hours.

I'm going to be on a relatively normal schedule, and staying as far as humanly possibly from the mobs gathering near Wal-Mart because I have no money and no room in my budget for Christmas this year.

So as usual, people on my list will once again be receiving handcrafted metalwork instead of bought in $500 items.

While devastating to many lots of people aren't affected. For example people working on salaries who didn't get laid off. And gas and food prices are finally coming back down.

Though consumer confidence may be down.

On the other hand, being short on cash is all the more reason to get up at 5am in order to make your money go the farthest it possible can by getting in on black friday sales. There simply won't be deals as good until next year at the same time. For that reason I think I may be going.

I wish there was a Black Friday in Jamaica. When i started working in January my plan was to save and by a laptop, an ipod and a phone. My cousin was supposed to fly over and get them for me. With all the terrible things that have happened in my family in the space of August and september this has become near impossible. I can't even think about birthday present or even christmas presents well not that i used to get any before. All that is in my head is paying my rent. Life is great ain't it? I just got a message from Cable and Wireless that my internet bill is due for payment within three days. I guess that's my gift from them. Yeay me! Today is just the best freaking day that could ever be.

It's kind of an emerging holiday. It used to just be slang among the retailers (and a helpful way of explaining to some poor employee why they had to wake up at 4am the day after thanksgiving).

But now it's kinda becoming well known, and for all I know may become a holiday in it's own right at some point.

At least with this one people wouldn't complain that it's too commercial.

No. Those days are different from each other and have nothing to do the holidays (at least in this context). The term "Black Friday" was first used in Philadelphia in reference to the large amount of traffic on this day. Now, like sunnyside said, it is used to reference how stores would go into the black on this day.

There is another "holiday" after Black Friday. It is called "Cyber Monday" (the Monday after Black Friday) and it is the unofficial start of the online holiday shopping season. It is said that on this day, people who have been away from their offices for Thanksgiving would return for work on this Monday and would order items online that they were not able to get from the stores themselves.

I hate Black Friday...

Last year, I worked at a local pizza restaurant on Black Friday, expecting nobody to show up because they would all be out shopping. I was wrong... I was horribly wrong. Everyone and their grandma showed up. I remember some guy was an idiot and tried to tell me that 75 cents was the same as 1 dollar. =_=

I'm kinda glad I don't have a job right now so I don't have to put up with rude customers on Black Friday. And I'd rather not go shopping that day either, I don't want to have to fight with idiots over stuff.

I do not shop on this day despite the great deals. It is way too crowded and if you want the best deals, you have to go to the store the night before and camp out.

 

There should be a Pink Friday.
