I have been thinking about the word noob, and I'm going to ask a few questions on the word..

Calling someone a noob is not flaming. At least, I think it's not.

And yes I have been called a noob before. But that's always going to happen when you are new to something. Because noob means "new guy" or "rookie". Any or other meanings are not the right ones. And I also use the word noob. Not that much though, probably because I play with pro players.

Someone who might be a newbie, and thus does not know anything, or someone old, stupid, has no manners, can't type properly, has an IQ equivalent to that of a rock and is proud of that and very stubborn in their ways. When angered, will fire back in the most vile language possible. Rules are nothing in their eyes.

Not necessary. It all depends on the context. It's like, shouting "I'm gonna kill you!" is not always a death threat. You might shout it to a bottle of beer you can't get open, and since beer is not alive, you can't threaten it to it's life. In the same way, if saying "noob" is part of a 3 page rant on why the world would be better off if you never were born, then it is (part of) a flame.

Probably way back in ye olden days. I can't remember individual instances though.

It is a mutation of the word "newbie", which in turn is a mutation of the word "new boy."

4 - How often do you use the word noob?

Very rarely. Probably most often in talking about the word itself. In threads like this.

3. Someone who is relatively new to something and thinks he's great in it while he obviously isn't. If he was only new he'd be a newbie not a noob.
4. I hardly use it, used it a few times back when I played Guild Wars, but only when I really felt it was necessary.

I. No, I wouldn't call it flaming at all. Pointing out someone's behaviour as n00bish can't be considered flaming.

2. No, not recently, but I'm sure back when I joined my first forum, I was called something similar. I can't quite recall, it was years ago. xD

3. A newbie is someone who has just joined or perhaps it's their first year on a forum. A n00b is someone who is new to the whole concept of foruming and hasn't quite yet got an understanding of how to behave on forums, they post one liners and off topic posts often.

4. I've used the word a few times, but not in a bad way.

2. Yes just recently. I was on anime forum late one night and I got bored so I thought I'll try a chat room for the 1st time. I introduce myself and told them I was tring it on a whim for the 1st time. Everybody freaked out saying their was a noob in the chat room and they were all going to log off so I freaked out and log out of the chat room and never been back. I find doing the pm thing and the forums are safer for me.

Seeing that I also go to pc forums, nub is a commonly used term which I use all the time in good humour. I rarely get called it because I would rather shut up if I don't know or if something really SUCKS I won't post a pic of it.

Not really, an insult maybe but flaming...come on.

Yes, all the time. Since I experience life, I'll always be a "noob" by someone's definition. I'm a Biochemistry noob, I'm a photoshop noob, I'm a swim team noob, etc.

My own definition is a bit of a negative one, there is a difference between noob and newbie. I agree with Souhi's post here.

4 - How often do you use the word noob?

Hmm, when I seriously talking/posting then never. However I use it at times when I am kidding or making a joke.
