FPS:es typically train spatial abilities, you'll get better at swiftly getting a picture of what an area looks like "from above" by merely walking through it.

What games in general do is distract, if you spend time playing games that could be spent studying, you will get poorer grades, though this is not because you were playing games specifically, you could have been practicing yodeling in the alps, or making miniature models of the battle of Troy and had the same effect.

I would not say that video games can "rot ones brain" although they can somewhat affect you and your learning. This could include things such as; instead of revising white and red blood cells you are trying to collect all of the special items on Final Fantasy VIII. Or instead of advancing in knowledge about the New Model Army you are trying to defeat the final boss on Trusty Bell, or are trying to find out where the sewers are on Shadow Hearts.

This can affect the way in which your knowledge grows regarding subjects in school, alas I myself am a victim. I spent most of my school days trying to complete Final Fantasy games. It is true that I am in college now but my learning was still affected by me paying more of my attention on getting Yuna's final summoning and killing Galbadian guards to break out of prison.

I could have learnt a lot more without games, let us put it in those words.
That which is; is the truth.

There are far more mind-killing pastimes out there than video games. Like day-time television.

Well, what I know about video gaming is that some people can get really addicted to it, and not able to stop it. I used to be very addicted to PC games, and I couldn't do my homeworks until midnight, even knowing that I must do the homework, but the gaming just totally controlled my mind.

I know someone that is really obsessed of video games, that whenever I call him to ask about homework, he is always playing. One time I told him to sleep at 11pm, and he promised. But next morning, he couldn't wake up, because he played games until 4 in the morning. And he didn't even realize that he played for 15 hours and it seemed like 3 hours.

It depends on the person, really. I know a several people that can really arrange their schedules well. They only play for a while, then do something else important.

Puzzles or board games are really different than video games. Those could be addictive too, but it wouldn't be as tempted as video games.

I don't believe they rot the brain, especially not the RPG's. In fact, they may actually help/polish it. With a role-playing game, you are constantly in the hotseat guiding a team to defeat an enemy. This is not a simple task, especially in later challenges and approaching the final confrontation.

Also... with some Wii titles, they are requiring that you move about in some way to achieve something (Wii Fit, Wii Sports, such and such). The benefits even sift into the areas of nursing homes (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,260990,00.html) and rehab (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,330051,00.html).

Perhaps to some games are mindwashing tools to goof-off with, but I believe that they can be/are used for so much more.

Metal Gear taught me a lot about cinematic editing because I was so interested in the game, and playing Smash Bros definitely trains the reflexes.

If playing videogames rots brains I should be brain dead. XD

And in addition here in Finland where english isn't the native language people why play RPG's like WOW or something are better in english than the ones who don't play.

Video gaming in general isn't harmful, but excessive video gaming may occupy time that would otherwise be spent doing homework, which will result in impaired grades, something that might be interpreted as "brain rot."

It what fasion of the word 'rot' do you mean? I can see this going into two ways. People may refer to the phrase 'rot your brain' from either it expanding laungage, violence, and the likes. Than theres just plain making you brain dead and what not.

    So this would be a two part oppinion than;
First off, sure it will rot your brain if where talking about it in the means of violence. Refering to games like GTA, Saints Row and other games that will not come into zee mind right now. In anycase sure I can see how people could say that it rots your brain in that sort of way. I would agree with that, since games that focus on violence, gore, and foul lanuage would have that effect. Than again it is the parents job to monitor what they play and read ESRBS rating system so they know what is suitable for their child's age group.

Now for it actually dumbing you down. In way since you may get preoccupied with playing the game rather taking care of what you need to take care of. Which is probably how most would perceive it as rotting your brain in the first place. However, games can increase a child's vocabulary and help develope the usuage of context clues. RPGS, are also very helpful for history classes, I know from personal experiances. So it can also help in ways. Reading and handeye cordination aswell which was mentioned earlier.
    --

All in all, I personaly dont belive it rots your brain.

HM.. no, it's biologicly impossible for your brain to physiclly rot, but if your stuck inside for like 6 hours playing video games you might get a little messed up mentally.

No, not in my opinion. I think it depends on the game and the mind of the player [If the soak things up like a sponge and output it, then yeah, it will rot their brain.

Some games can teach you some stuff that you didnt learn in a normal environment, but others can't really be helpful, like animal crossing (no brain power). Try playing something like war games, I learned alittle about world war II from a game that wouldn't absorb in my brain during a history class.
Rot your brain? Depends on the game.
I am no more a rose than I am its thorns.
No more a gentle breeze than I am the hailing storm.
I am no more hated than I am loved.
And I am no more heartfilled than I am heartless.
    This is who I am.

Anyone who thinks that videogames don't rot your brain has never been on the GameFAQs.com boards. You'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

well certain video games get you ready for the future. some helps you get better with everday life and some are just a stress reliver.
regret nothing and you will survive
    survive and you will succeed
succeed and you will be happy
    happiness sometimes conquers all.
