In most cases, you are right, that a person does not need to know every single thing about an anime character to be a fan of them or even hate them. However, if a person wants to argue about a certain aspect of a character, that person should know everything (or at least the obvious things) about it.

Although that may have been because I watched it in Japanese the second time through and I tend to gain a lot more knowedge when reading things as opposed to just listening.

You can choose to not watch an anime for whatever reason you choose. However, it is weird how you flip-flop between liking a character and not liking them. You may not have liked The Major this whole time (or until a few days ago when you found out she was bisexual). However, most anime fans do not have a long discussion about how much they hate a certain character (you are the exception in one case where you made a thread dedicated to how much you hated Bleach...because of the "sex" and "witchcraft"). If you talk about a certain character all the time, most will assume that you like them, or have some type of interest in them, regardless of what you may have said.

Looking back on some of your threads, you have made many, MANY comments on The Major's sexuality or her morals regarding it.
