Depends on who you ask. The RIAA would say it is, others not so much.
But the real question is why are you clogging the internet tubes to watch media you already own? Rip it, save it to your hard drive, and be done with it.

It's illegal in the sense your not paying for it.If it's already dubbed go buy it.If it's not torrent/stream.If it's not then the studios should get off of their lazy posteriors and dub it.

I was referiing to people who don't,but I guess that's irrelevant.
I left out something:There is a diffrence from recording and downloading.By recording your the one liable{If you distribute to make a profit}.If you download they're the ones held liable. You too,but c'mon they aren't gonna go through the files and see who downloaded.
Downloading anime is always illegal, unless it's a purchased download from a licensed distribution company.
Obviously, it is illegal to download if it is licensed in your country. This is undeniable.
The one thing that many people seem to be mistaking is that if it is not licensed in your country, it is legal to download. This is incorrect. No matter where the series is licensed, you are still violating a copyright and stealing the media from the original owners of the the media, i.e the producers of the anime.
Recording something using, say, TIVO, isn't really illegal, because you're copying it from a licensed distributor and broadcaster, and keeping it for your own personal use. You are not making duplicate copies of it, nor trying to distribute it without the consent of the copyright holder.

There is a legal case to be made for downloading something you already own. When you purchase [insert media here] you are buying a license. It allows you some measure of freedom to do what you want with it, aka Fair Use. Does downloading something you already own count as fair use? It's legally debateable. Some people have gotten away with it, some people did not. The general guideline I hear is that if it's something you already own, can prove you own, and if it's the same version you can freely download it off the internets. Although you can't distribute it legally, of course.
But again, there's really no reason to go into this legal grey area if you already own it on DVD. Just rip the DVDs and be done with it.

I'm aware of this already, but for the sake of the thread, I suppose it's good to point that out. I heard of a case a few years back about a man who would make DVD copies of every movie he owned, and something-or-other happened and a video company tried to sue him over it. Because he legally owned that copy of the media, it was found that he was within his rights to make copies of it.
(Since I heard of this case, I've made back-ups for just about every CD I own.)

It's supposedly "ok" if you have licensed copies of whatever you're getting. But the fact of the matter is, you're getting it from an illegal source. XD
Fansubs use an argument of "It's not licensed, sold, or distributed in any way, form, or fashion here; so we're not hurting the market for it. Instead, we're helping create a larger fanbase." And most groups will stop fansubbing if the show does get licensed/brought over/or whatever. (Though there are some that continue no matter what, but that'll be their problem.)
Personally I doubt it. Seems to me like there are astrologically far too many users to crack down on individuals. It's like those swarms of little shops that sell pirated material in third world countries: they'll make an arrest here and there as an example to please whoever needs to be pleased, but in the end it would be ineffectual. That's slowly changing. RIAA and the MPAA are trying very hard to force ISPs to monitor downloads and try and charge users with copyright violations. Whether or not it actually happens is open to debate.

Over here in Australia it is illegal to record from your television unless you pay for cable television, and you can only record the cable television channels.
Most people don't know it is illegal because everyone does it. Try arresting everyone in the country eh?

It's only illegal if you get caught. >:3
technically, it's illegal, but i think many people do it. i always download everything (anime, music, series,...) before buying it, because i have no intention of giving money for something i don't like
Hmm where I live it's really hard to get your hands on anime. Yes I have to download it. I don't feel good with it. But I don't like internet purchase hassles anyways. And I always use it for own. Use I'm not gonna send it around. I think it's only bad if you go make copies and sell them. But downloading is stealing that's a fact.
It's kinda scary when you think of people illegally downloading stuff. What is everyone going to do when they start cracking down on it.. I'm sure more than half of the U.S. alone downloads music for free.. And videos as well.. It's just going to get worse ~_~
Being an AMV creator and all. I'm well aware of this kinda stuff...sorta xD

Come now, everyone knows we are just downloading subtitles. If there's some kind of anime in the background behind the words it's just a mere coincidence.
