Has anyone here had to get a tooth pulled? I have the options of getting a root canal or simply having it extracted. I'm not sure which I should choose. Which results in more pain?

Root canals are terrible from what i heard. I am getting my wisdom teeth out on august 28th and from what i heard is that yes it does hurt a lot but you are knocked out for it. The pain when you come out of it is yes painful but it should take a day or two to feel better. My sister had a root canal and said that it kept hurting for like 2 weeks for her.
Which tooth is this?
Getting a tooth pulled hurts for a longer time and you end up with a big gap for a while, while getting a root canal just makes half your face numb for a few hours during and after the procedure. I know, I've had both done .__. However, when you get the root canal, after the novacaine wears off, you'll be in pretty bad pain. The pain in root canals can vary with the person and the location of the tooth thats getting pulled. I just had one a couple years ago x.x; I got a tooth pulled when I was 8 and its was one of the worst experiences of my life, with the root canal being a close second xD
As to your problem, go with the root canal if its a front tooth and just get it exxtracted if its a molar or near the back where you cant see it. Hope this helps ^.^

I forgot why I had to have it pulled. All I know is that they numbed my mouth... which made my lips feel totally weird. And when they pulled it, it DID hurt. But not as bad as I thought it would. I think I was in the 5th when it happened, so I could withstand pain more.
I can't say which one hurts more...seeing as how I've never hada root canal But yeah, getting your teeth pulled is painful, no matter how much novacain they apply or how long they let it sit >.<;;; Here's a story:
Back when I was in elementary school, at around 7-8 years old, I went to the dentists as BMC(Berkishire Medical Center), and had an appointment to have one of my teeth extracted >_> When I got there, they didn't even let the novcain sit, and immediately started the slow and painful process of drilling my tooth out O_O;;; So yeah, I would say that I was in terrible pain and actually grabbed my mom's arm and scratched it several times as I cried out in horror!! Worst session ever, and they said that I was brave and even gave me a little plastic trophe ...Blah!! The dentists=worst time of my life!! X_X
But I'm not trying to scare you dude, I'm just telling my side of the story, because those rotten dentists always think they know what they were doing!! =0 If they really knew what they were doing, they would've applied more novacain and let it set there for atleast 5 minutes...not 5 seconds!!!!
Oh, Hi-deeki, imagine... your kind not eating raw fish! ^_^

I've gotten 4 teeth pulled out (due to having more teeth than my mouth can handle, but I lucked out with two wisdom teeth) but I've never had a root canal. But getting these four teeth out, I can't explain the pain. The first time I got two pulled out and the process didn't hurt much, I mean they stabbed me with needles and pulled the teeth out, but when I got home...I nearly died of pain. The second time its hurt so much when they did the extraction. The numby-thing didn't work after they stabbed me 20 times (I counted) so when they started extracting, I could feel it. It was terrible. So I somehow conveyed that and they stabbed me 20 extra times. And as hard as I tried not to cry, my eyes watered and tears did fall. Ah, well, its different for different people.
Ice cream numbs the pain. That's all you have to remember.

I had 2 get 4 teeth pulled 2 out in my braces. the lady that did it was nice and when she pulled it out i asked,"is it out yet?" i kept asking that 4 next 3 that she pulled. now the gap that was in my mouth is almost gone due 2 the braces. i'd say in a couple months my mouth will be metal free
It's a long story.
My orthodontist said I needed oral surgery because my teeth were crowded. I had gotten five teeth pulled. There was this one baby tooth that hadn't came out so it started to slide up into my gums and pushed the adult tooth up more into my skull. So they exposed the adult tooth and attached a gold chain to it. So now everytime I go to the orthodontist to get a check up on my braces, they retie the string that is pulling the gold chain down. Which hurts like heck! But that happened last year in July. So it's been officially a year since I had the sugery.I had gotten the sugery in July, too. Wow! The tooth is showing now so they will soon add a bracket to the tooth and my mouth will be normal! Yay! BTW, the tooth was a 'vampire tooth'. You know the tooth that are really sharp. It was the one on the left side of the mouth. Hehe. Told you it was a long story. ^^'

I haven't had any teeth pulled out for quite a while. My dentist says that they are good and that I don't need braces hopefully.

Yes. When I was 11, I had the terrible experience of getting my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out by force. A bloody mess! My teeth were still strongly rooted down to my gums, and it hurt really really really bad to get them pulled out. I left the dentist in tears due to the unbearable pain. =(
Of course, at the time my parents were too poor to pay for any sort of anesthetic or numbing medicine, so I was expecting it.
I'd recommend whatever's less painful. For your sake.
I've never had a tooth pulled, but I have had a root canal. I was terrified at first, but it wasn't that bad at all.
Do you believe it in your head?
I had 3 removed before I had my braces then.
That was a long, long time ago.

Oh man is this a good subject for me XD I went through a most painful saga some years back involving the last upper left molar. I have a small mouth, and what we realized in the end had happened is my wisdom tooth came in and crushed the molar, killing it. I was in agony for a total of two weeks straight while the dentists fiddled with it, opening it up, attempting a root canal, closing it, and then having to start all over again when the pain would return. In the end I was told I'd need to see a specialist. This left me with the very same dilemma. Do I have the root canal done, when my insurance will only barely cover it, with the understanding that I'd need to pay for the cap out of pocket? Or do I have it pulled. In the end I had it pulled. It was really for the best in my case, as it was far back enough not to be seen, and wouldn't have lasted long anyway thanks to the wisdom tooth. That wisdom tooth has since shifted into its place.
As for pain, well...having had both, I can say I found the pulling far more painful, both during and after. This was in part due to the dentist needing to break the tooth into pieces to get it out. My root canal experience was not typical, but I do know the pain is generally not great, or long-lasting. It doesn't even usually require prescription pain meds, which a tooth pulling will. In short, the pain does not differ so greatly that it should be the deciding factor.
Each situation is going to vary in complexity, but there are several things you need to consider and keep in mind:
- Location of the tooth. I was lucky that mine is not visible. If yours is you'll have to consider whether you want to live with a gap or not.
- Cost. Root canals and caps are significantly more expensive than getting a tooth pulled. The cap is even more expensive on non-molar teeth as it has to be of a higher quality.
- Having a tooth pulled can shift other teeth out of alignment. Again I was lucky in having it be the back molar, and having a wisdom tooth to take its place.
- Keep in mind that getting a root canal is not a surefire save. Not only can it fail like mine, but it doesn't mean the tooth will last forever. The odds are good you'd need to get it pulled one day anyway.
I would suggest you discuss these points and more with your dentist. If they're anything like mine they will try to pressure you into the root canal (I saw another dentist to have it pulled). Make sure you make the decision you're most comfortable with.
I have regular check-ups at the dentistry but have never had a tooth removed. Nor have I ever had to have any fillings. Although one of my teeth really hurts now, however it is not a tooth ache. I know it is silly but it is because I actually fainted the other day and I must have landed on my face. When I gained consiousness it hurt like mad. This was all due because of a simple headache.

That which is; is the truth.
But that's what's up with one of my teeth. It won't come out, but I can feel the one under it. I haven't been to the dentists cos my mom has said that it'll come out in due time, but its been like that for at least two years. After hearing your story, I'm a little terrified.
I've had my wisdoms out, and the anticipation was a lot worse than the removal, even though they were difficult extractions. None of them had come through fully, and two had come in sideways, so I had to have my gums cut open and two of the teeth had to be drilled up into bits first.
It didn't actually hurt, but it was still unpleasant because my head was being wrenched around a lot, I could feel the teeth sliding out, and there were all sorts of horrible cracking and snapping sounds coming from my jaw. Afterwards, it wasn't bad at all, I ate a full meal as soon as the anaesthetic had worn off, and I only really noticed the giant holes in my mouth if something got lost down them
I think I'd prefer a root canal though, if it was for anything other than wisdom teeth. I've heard they hurt more than extractions afterwards, but it's worth trying to save teeth if you can as implants can be very expensive.
Pulled out? Yup. i had an extra one between my front two teeth...
i have no idea what a root canal would feel like though...
Get it pulled.
My friend has one and she didn't get hers pulled.
Now she wishes she did.

I would also agree with this. I've had 2 root canals and several teeth extracted. Both of my root canals were on front teeth, so you don't need a crown if it's on the front teeth. If you get a root canal on your molars, then you need a crown so that the tooth doesn't crack. If your tooth is in the back, you should probably get it extracted, if in the front, probably get a root canal. I don't think that either is more painful than the other. You're pretty numbed up for both. Good luck!
