This may sound selfish but I'd rather put myself before others. I hate it when people depend on others to get a job done. For example, this boy, Ryan, always wanted my help in Math class. I always told him nicely that I like working alone.
But getting back on-topic here. If I find, say, a pencil on the floor in my classroom. I'll pick it up and say, "Who's pencil is this?" and kindly return it to it's owner. Im not selfish all the time.

First I would think, "Do I need it?" If no, then I would think, "Do they need it?" If yes, then I would help. In your example, though, most likely, they would use for drugs. A study by some TV station showed that out of hundreds or so of people who held "Will work for food" signs, only one actually wanted a job. The others only wanted sympathy.

Realistically if I were to see money on the floor I would probably give it up to this homelss man. He may just use it to spend on vodka or drugs, but I am greatful that I even live under a roof with a caring family that cook me meals and stuff. Something this guy may never witness again.

Well it depends on the situation like most said....
With the hundred dollar bill situation I WON'T give a guy a hundred dollar bill if he looks like a drunk... and i know what those look like i have some in my family. It depends on what my heart tells me to do, in that case i would probably keep it... since i know that drugs can seriously mess you up.

But being me I'd probably feel a little guilty for not giving it to him.... and i'd probably give it to someone less fortunate than me anyway... like someone in my family struggling with money, something like that...

Honestly its my life and my job to put others before me, no matter the situation or if i lose my life or not.

Truly as a person i would die to make at least one other person happy.

well i would say others, but mainly my best friends, they are more important and i would do anything for them, cuz i guess thats just how i am... =3 i would put them first over me any day... ^-^

Me personally, I Like to help others. I'm more inclined to help family and really close friends before anything else. As for the $100.00 I probably would keep it. However I'd go buy him food and stuff. Just because there'd be the possibility of the homeless person blowing the money on drugs and alcohol, then it would have been fruitless to share. I find it delighting to know that I've made someone happy. But ultimately, I myself need to be happy and resolute before I help someone else.

Yeah me too. I like helping others, it makes me feel good inside. And I'll do that too, I'll keep the $100 and buy the guy some food and drinks. Here in my country, it's actually illegal to give alms to the poor because some tend to buy drugs, alcohol or go gambling.

Naturally, everyone is selfish by default. Think about it, when a child is born, the first thing that happens is he/she starts crying. Simply because she/he WANTS something.

I would say the reason a baby cries is more due to the fact he just got shoved through a constricting flesh tube. Although I guess you could interpret that as a desire not to be shoved through constricting flesh tubes if you wanted.

Even so, what about all of the days and nights afterwards for several months and years? I'm sure an infant is over being shoved through a constricting flesh tube. Its the desire to survive wanting someone to tend to his/her side.

It's programmed to scream, otherwise it's needs would be ignored. It would be nice if babies came out of the womb speaking English and possessing a solid grasp on manners, but it's unlikely to come about that way. Evolution causes babies to scream, not simple greed.

And they still are not thinking about the person that has to care for them. Which i would call unmitigated selfishness. The second the infant needs something, it cries. More support: We are all born sinners because we are selfish. I mean the crying. I'm not sure if that makes things clear but I sure hope I don't get attacked for bringing religion into this.

This is a touchy subject, but I'll be honest, you do have to weigh your own life in contrast to the value of others. A lot of people would like to say everyones life has the same worth, but I disagree. I'm going a little bit deeper than "do i like helping people" here.

If I were on a boat with a criminal, or a homeless man, and it began to sink with only one life jacket, I'd take it for myself.

If the other person was a scientist or Brain surgeon, or of political importance, I'd insist for them to take it.

In everyday life though, I always volunteer to help my neighbors and friends, especially my family. When I have time I help strangers too. I rarely deny someone help when they ask for it.

As for the homeless man and the 100 dollars, if I found it on the street, I'm not loosing anything, and I could use good karma more than money, I'd give it to him.

What is that adage? Give a hungry man a fish and he will be hungry tomorrow, teach him to fish and he'll never be hungry again. The homeless person will be poor again in a month. What he needs is a steady job and possibly rehab, not quick cash.

My point is that he doesn't benefit from the money more than I do. So I might as well take it.
