    Default Visual Novel

I'm not bashing, I just want to know why Japanese people are so seemingly infatuated with the "visual interactive novel" type RPG found in all their romance games? It seems pretty boring to me....this is not interactive storytelling, this is reading. Someone enlighten me to the reason so many fall in love with these wastes of money...

I don't know anything about them, perhaps you could include some links to photos or something?

Find "Kana - Little Sister" on Bit Torrent. Play it. You will see why people like them. Kana- Little Sister is famous among Anonymous for it's ability to leave the average human being an empty, blubbering husk of their former selves. I was even depressed by it, and my emotional armor is nigh impregnable.

There is sex in the game, but it's so far from the focus to not matter (like 10 minutes out of the 5 hours it takes to play it). I also suggest Season of Sakura, and Divi Dead, or True Love. Sex is more a factor in those games, though.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

Why not try playing a few first?

Although very few are translated, that's the problem.
If each mistake being made is a new one, then progress is being made.

Making a visual drive was a pain though. I'm still needing a bigger sized CD for it.

    And translated =D
(any clues on mounting the IMG files?)

Also adding, one of the most best, or so I've heard.

Yeah, Zero Punctuation is awesome, but I already have played a bunch of them and wondering what's so great... it just seems to me that if you have to go through all the bad translations and sh*t, then why wouldn't one just go read a romance manga or something, same experience, or if you want yourself in the game, play a regular RPG with romance as part of the storyline....?

While I'm not particularly clear on all you are saying, I mount disk images using Virtual DAEMON.

For one, all the examples I just gave have good translations. There are lot's of decent localizers. For two, romance manga tends to be exclusively for girls, is always in black and white, usually ugly as sin art-wise, and doesn't have music or sound, much less the interactive choices. As for RPGs, I've played all of one RPG that had a decent romance storyline (Lunar:SSSC). The vast majority are paper-thin and sophomoric.

That argument only works if you aren't advocating other media. Plus, it's retarded for reasons that should be obvious.

Got me there, Mr. mod, but I guess my final question is, what's the big accomplishment in romancing a cartoon girl into bed or whatever? (I know that's not the point of all of them, I'm just generalizing here) And I wasn't advocating the other media, like manga, etc..., I was saying that those other forms of media would probably be easier to access then computer dating sims. If you disagree, fine, I actually would rather you don't mindlessly agree with me, but at least full understand my meaning.

It's just a niche that happens to encompase the whole contry, it's just a part of their culture. I assume you're also an American, our culture is a puree of the rest of the world, so it's hard for most of us to comprehend unyielding tradition common in other parts of the world. Frankly, I don't get why anyone likes turn-based games, but that's just who they are.

Mostly, I just call them weird/tasteless and leave it at that.

There's a whole generation of people that grew up digging the "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. Visual Novels are a lot like them, only they can be better written, written for a more mature (and I'm not talking necessarily porn, but since this is Japan we are talking about it's pretty much omnipresent in the genre) audience, and include music and animation. That's pretty much the appeal. A few of them are extremely well written, and some visual novels get made into actual anime series. I can say that Kana is the second instance of the written word being able to make me really, really sad, with the first being Stone Fox.

I have noticed through the time I've played Visual Novels and talked about them with people it really is a love/hate thing. Either people just think they're rather dull, or don't see the point, or they really like them. I've yet to find multiple people who are sort of into them.

Myself, I really like them. I've read through my share of them and what always grasps me is the way stories are told in VNs makes me get way more into the story then when I watch say a drama or read a book. There are some really, really bad VNs out there that are not worth the time. But the ones that are well written are mostly very good stories, capable of really moving you. Clannad, Planetarian, the other key works. Ever17, Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, and lots of others are really good stories.

And yes, it is actually just like reading a book, only you're involved. When I read a Visual Novel, I'm not really reading what the main character does. I am the main character.

Bottom line: as with many other things, it's a personal thing. There's no reasoning with why some people are infatuated with a certain genre of multimedia and why others aren't. Some factors can enter into the calculation, but ultimately, you just can't put a finger on the why.

I tried one, Yume Miru Kusume I think it's called. I found the characters to be deeper than I expected and enjoyed that aspect, but at the same time had a nagging feeling that I would be better served earning the trust of and forming a bond with an actual person.

I'm tempted to play Kana and have been for a couple of years now, but I know me. I'd remember something at work and get all weepy, and nobody wants that. Yes I am a sentimental fool, thank you for asking.

Yeah. Kana will ruin your life. I'm pretty hardened against emotional ploys, but even I was depressed for a few days after playing that game. I on some level want to play until I get the Happy Ending, but I lack the emotional fortitude to play it the 3 (or 4, I forget) more times that would require.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

Try playing a few before you go around asking, kyuu~...Then after you've played some and still don't get why the japanese are so obsessed then go to Japan and ask someone there, kyuu~. They would know the answer better than we would, kyuu~.

    Sleep, my beloved.
    Your life goes on.
You were born, and you lived.
You will tell the song of hope, won't you?
    For eternity.

    Offer up these tears,
The words of a new love.
Thank you, days of bliss within my dreams.
I thank the fact that we met here.

I went through that, (6 endings btw) and the so-callled "happy ending" isn't really that happy at all from my point of view. Not going to spoil it, but it still left me quite depressed and wanting for more, as it does with more of the people who played it, which explains the rather intensive fanfic writers for Kana.

    (Oh, and I'm bashing)
Really? I think it's okay. I have one ya see (ain't saying the title). I find it quite amusing.
Also some great animes are from visual novels like Clannad.
I like it when the characters react to what you say. I find it really amusing.
Especially the game of Suzumiya Haruhi which is also made Visual novel style (of course, no bad stuff there).

When I play Persona 3, sometimes, I get tired of battling the shadows. I look forward to my next date with a girl. The date is visual novel style.

meh, I have played a bunch, and they all seem pretty...meaningless to me. seems like a strange way to tell a story.

haha, if you hate em so much, why would you play a bunch of em?

Can't really make an argument out of mere speculation, can you? He'd have had to have played at least a few of them before being able to legitimately condemn the genre.

To attempt to see how anyone could possibly fall in love with them. Needless to say, I didn't see it.
