Overreacting or what? Deathnote scare in WA.

Okay, a housemate brought it to my attention today that there was an article in the paper relating to Death Note.

I really didn't know what to say after reading this article. But I just HAD to start a topic on it. Is it close-minded people overreacting, or what? Please post your thoughts, and lets discuss this.
Myself, I feel it's just another overreaction to something that anime just happens to be an item present but not involved. Really? Can anyone honestly say they have NEVER wished at least one person dead? Would you rather we keep such things bottled up so we can become maladjusted psychos? Are we not told it's unhealthy to sit on such feelings?

Well, certainly it's an overreaction, given that it's just an anime and manga series. Leave it to people to flip out over such trivials things.

But, I think it is also important to realize that by these kids thoughts, if, by some means, they were series, it means they'd be really willing to kill those people...In such a case, it might be better to be a bit cautious, just in case.

That is so pathetic! Expelled for posessing a fictional, fake book? How stupid! If that were to happen in a school in this country the teachers would genuinely laugh and take it as a joke. Trust me all my teachers did their job extremely well and could take any joke. Seriously though that is so overreactive! XD

The book itself is not fake and fictional and is to write people's names in it whom you hate. With the recent shootings I understand their fears. But this goes to far.

Well realistically, writing a persons name in a book will not kill them. T'was just a decent story-line for an awesome Anime.

You'll be telling me that a student claims that he can see a demon with wings named Ryuk next. T'is just an Anime with a great story, that is all.

Living in the US, I can understand their concernes to a limited point. We're not known for our stable students. We're more known for them acting out things seen on TV or in video games. But I'm sure it shouldn't be that difficult to see the difference between someone writing about killing someone in real terms, and someone writing about killing someone in fantasy terms.
Course, with all popular things, someone managed to paint it to be a "bad" thing. There are people out there who just don't like anything foreign in "our" country. Such foolishness if you ask me. Death Note is just entertainment. If people can't distinguish between fantasy and reality, it's THEY who need to be visiting a shrink. You can't blame TV or video games for a person being unstable or crazy.

I think expulsion went a bit too far. Banning the book on campus is perfectly logical, and some sort of discipline is as well. But to spin this in such a way that resembles a credible terrorist attack is just foolish.

...Okay. That EXACT thing happened in my middle school. Two of my classmates got composition notebooks, colored over them with a sharpie and pasted the Death Note logo on them. And there were actually names and descriptions of deaths on them.

...They got their "Death Notes" confiscated and had to talk to the principal. Yay justice!

They're just overreacting. I mean really, a Notebook will not do anything to the students. It's just like punching a wall when you're mad. I can understand if those students who had a uhh "Death Note" with them, started killin. But expulsion just for possession of the item? Thats going too far. They're treated as if they brought illegal firearms to school.

I think the "discipline" (as the article refers to it) is alright, but I do believe the expulsion was too much. Considering the current trend of terrorists and that the notebook resembled a hit list, I see the reaction as understandable.

Even though that DeathNote presented no real danger (except it could have been a new terrorist tactic, one never knows) it still isn't perfectly okay to express things that way. I see it as parallel to telling a person you want to kill him/her--if you do that in school, you'd get disciplined as well.

Hmph, my brother sort of owns a DeathNote too, by the way. He made it himself, though, and because of copyrights and stuff he didn't make an exact copy--he placed "DeafNote" on the cover. xD lol

I agree with this punishment- any animu scum that sits around writing popular kids names in a book because they "hate them" should be shot out of a cannon into the sun. If you are going to be a creepy little git with a tenuous grasp on reality, don't get caught.

I agree on the punishments but not the expulsion . Things like deathnotes are have no place in school . they can be interpreted as threats or even a form of bullying . I forgot what school it was here in ny was on one of the local channels , A group of kids went around picking on kids and writing their names down in a note book . If your name was in it then you were dead to all the other students and they ignored completely not a single word and if you were caught talking to anybody that "died" your name was written and you became dead to them too . All the kids involved were suspended and the owner of the actual notebook expelled . Just a prime example of how a fictional fake book can have real consequences .

Keep in mind i'm a huge Death note fan . I'm also a fan of many other anime / cartoons /tv show /movies and video games that have a darker side to them . Differnce is I don't go wailing my swords , knives and guns about in public trying to emulate the violence in my media interest .

I find it to be alittle over the top. Come on now. Expulsion? I'd recommend detention or a suspention along with alitte counciling.
But also keep in mind, it's not easy being bullied. And no one ever believes you if you do tell them. Bullying is so much the "in" thing they even made a game out of it. Honestly, we just keep taking things way to far, and tend to ignore what's really important and only focus on the trivial.

I don't think that kid shoulda gotten expelled. People were just getting overexcited. I also think that writing down those names is just like writing them down in a burn book. They just used the fact that it's called a Death Note to discipline them further.
