Anne Tyler - Her endings are usually somewhat a let down (I think she's pushed into making them happy =/), but I LOVE her characters. The woman knows how to make a character come alive.
Gregory Maguire - I admire his imagination, his writing, and his characters. He has a knack for rewriting well-known stories in a way unlike any I've ever seen...and he likes to twist fairy tales, like myself!
Ian McEwan - The brilliant mind behind Atonement. This man has a gift, one I crave to have myself. He has a keen eye for detail, and is the master of telling much with subtly. I imagine he has spent much time people-watching, as he manages to portray character development through inflections, gestures, and expressions unlike any writer I've read to date. Like Anne Tyler he has a gift for characters. Like Gregory Maguire he has a talent for the written word. How can I not worship this perfect blend of my other two favorite authors?

I love that series. They had a graphic novel out quite recently. It was interesting how they made Butler look in it. For some reason, I always thought about Rude from FF7 whenever I read him in the books.XD

My two favourite authors would have to be Jasper Fforde and George R.R Martin.
Martin does the Song of Ice and Fire series (a fantasy series). What I love about him is that no one is "evil". Every one has motivation for acting the way they do. It's not someone just wants to destroy the world. It's very refreshing to find--especially in a fantasy series.
Fforde is just a clever writer. You can sense his genius in his work. The subtle clues, the clever writing, the alliterations to classic works is incredible. I would highly suggest reading this author. It's extremely unique. I've never read anything like it before.

My favourite author would have to be David eddings, he is such a talented writer, he was the author that got me into reading books and also i love JJR Tolkien, if you don't know who he is go and find out.

William Gibson: About the only Cyberpunk writer that's any good. I love reading his books, in spite of his apparent love of screwing me out of a decent ending every time.
Frank Herbert: DUNE. Enough Said.
Phillip K. Dick: An awesome writer, and one that should be familiar to most people as he wrote the books that were licensed (with middling accuracy) into Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly, and Minority Report.
Hunter S. Thompson: Probably one of the greatest human beings ever born.
