why hasn't anyone tried to make a troupe that's like the modern day monty python?

the monty python troupe was one of the funniest groups of people ever! so where is the modern day equivalent of them? sure no one could live up to the original and i'm not saying that they should rip off monty python. i'm just curious as to why no one has tried to make a similar comedy troupe but that's still different enough so as to not be a rip off. the closest thing i can think of is the broken lizard troupe and they are very funny but they use normal comedy as where monty python used "silliness" to make their jokes. silly has always been funny but for some reason most people push it to the side in favor of slapstick humor which while hilarious just isn't the same as "silly" comedy. so do you think there should be a new comedy troupe that specializes in "silly" comedy? and again i'm not saying they should be a direct rip off of monty python but just use "silly" comedy like they did.

yes and no. the reason being is that monty python while still a sketch comedy show was still a troupe and both those shows replace cast members on a regular basis. plus for starters madtv is the poor mans snl and isn't even as good as the magazine. also they don't specialize in "silly" humor as i previously stated. but you're half right.

The only similar groups I can think of were actually cast members of a tv show and did not normally perform together except during the filming of episodes. "The Young Ones" was a Brit-Com that was shown a lot on MTV back in the 80's, and it was hysterically funny at times. "The Black Adder" is another great British comedy series from either the late 80's or early 90's. Of course, the Canadian "Kids in the Hall" were very edgy and funny in the mid-90's. At one point, you could find episodes of that show being broadcast on at least three different networks. Then, one day, it just totally and completely disappeared from the airwaves...

But none of these quite equals the brilliance of Monty Python. They were a once in a lifetime gathering of minds, like the Beatles or the Manhattan Project...

There is modern surrealistic humor. It's just that it has trouble getting past the US censors, because of it's European relaxed attitude towards sex.

Green Wing is also good. It's like scrubs, except it's funny.

Indeed, Greenwing is amazing. Scrubs I never really liked. It was more stupidity rather than laughter. Whenever my friends or Brother show me this I just sit their with a straight face praying for the moment it finishes. But that goes for most American comedy's with me. I never watch them anymore, not that I ever really did.

The Whitest Kids U'Know seems to fit the bill.

Not all of it is the same vein as MP, WKUK is pretty edgy, but their song about getting high with dinosaurs is pretty silly if you ask me.

ok thanks. i've heard of all those but i guess i never realized that they were what i was looking for. well i guess i was too focused on the things that made monty python a one of a kind group and thus would make any modern day group like them be a rip off in a sense. thanks for all the info everyone.

um...they came waaaaayyyy before monty python and are all dead now. only one member of the monty python troupe is dead and that's only because he got lung cancer. but the 3 stooges were around before color tv. i think they 1st appeared in the 30's or 40's. monty python didn't appear until the 60's.

The Three Stooges were elite. Far beyond their time. They changed comedy for everyone. Shame about how their lives were lived though. Fame back then was a lot worse than it is now.

The Reduced Shakespeare Company is a pretty good comedy troupe. I'm going to see them in the Ann Arbor Festival.

3 words: The Mighty Boosh. It's surrealist humour at its best. You americans might not be familiar with it though.
