Toshiba to give up on HD DVD

TOKYO--Toshiba is planning to give up on its HD DVD format for high-definition DVDs, conceding defeat to the competing Blu-ray technology backed by Sony, a company source said on Saturday. The move will likely put an end to a battle that has gone on for several years between consortiums led by Toshiba and Sony vying to set the standard for the next-generation DVD and compatible video equipment.

Well I bought it like a year and a half ago but I'm still pissed. So now what? How long before DVD are obsolete? Man I am tired of this garbage, at least VHS latest a while.

I don't see why they would do this and I doubt all hope is suddenly lost in DVD technology. Blue-ray is completely unnecessary. "My blu-ray disks have 50 GB storage capacity and plays in way better definition than your HD DVD's LOL!!!!111" I don't give a crap. I'm not spending over five hundred dollars on a BDROM player when I can go out and spend twenty bucks on a decent movie and pop it in my DVD player I've already had for a year without all the fancy enhancements.

I really didn't care about either of them, I rarely use optical media and rarely watch movies. I believe they aren't worth it and with faster speeds downloads is the way of the future.

While I feel that the industry decision to exclusivly adopt Blu Ray is premature, it does put and end to the "format war" before it even really starts. Shame the movie-goer market was leaning towards HD DVD, given another year or so it would probably show but right now the sales are on the side of Blu-Ray and that's all anyone cares about.

That's settles it! I was just starting to buy a ton of DVDs of my favorite old-time movies, a collection if you will, but they all ruined it for me. I'm getting back to downloading pirated material from now on, and don't you dare lecture me about it.

Why are people making it sound like they have to give up their DVD's? I haven't seen a lot of anime coming out in Blu-Ray yet and DVD's aren't going to go obsolete any time soon. HD-DVD's are dead, but DVD is still strong.

And the Blu-Ray won because people who have PS3's were buying the movies. Sony won this one thanks to a gamble that paid off on one end and is starting to pay off on the gaming end. I for one was betting against them, so congrats to Sony for proving me wrong.

Its not official that Microsoft will do a Blu-Ray attachment for 360, but considering the division that makes the players has nothing to do with the PS3, plus Sony might see it as just one more way to sell movies, there shouldn't be a reason not to go into it. But who knows, Sony might consider it helping the enemy and say no for all we know.

Just to let everyone know, Blu-Ray players still play DVDs. Unless you have a HD-DVD player you shouldn't much care. The market still isn't strong enough for "Let's stop selling DVDs and sell people Blu-Ray instead" to come about anytime soon.

Anyway, as soon as the 360 backed out of a HD-DVD drive, Blu-Ray dominance became clear.

No, back before 360 was released, it was supposed to include HD-DVD. It didn't, so Blu-Ray won by default.

It's nothing new- Thompson SA owns a lot of the rights for the MP3 format, Toshiba owns the DVD format (I think. They may have sold it to a consortium or something.) Technology costs money.

I don't know why you are quoting me, because I never said you should. That said, some time in, say the next 5 years, they (probably) won't sell DVDs anymore and will sell Blu-Ray instead. At that time, feel free to buy a Blu-Ray player- or not.
