    Default Quality of Animation...

This thread is just my opinion.

That being said - I find I enjoy the quality of Animation on shows like
    Gundam 08th MS / Evangelion / Ninja Scroll ( yes, it's a bigger budget movie )

I just find the Animation on titles such as Gundam SEED to be lacking in a strange way.

The art is good - but it has a more cartoony feel if that makes any sense? I also don't like some of the visual effects when it looks like they are simply "moving the camera" over the animation to create movement.

I'd just like to hear some people comments on this : Agree or disagree?

I very much so agree. I dislike that many shows are moving into simplistic motion of objects and characters across the screen, rather than include any detail within their motions. I was actually just thinking about Bleach, which had...average animation, I guess, for much of it's first arcs, but once things got rolling in the Arrancar and Hueco Mundo arcs, it's as they they're just broadcasting a paper doll moving across a bland colored background at times. It's as though they characters themselves aren't even interacting with the environment. Unfortunately, most production companies are willing to put up the cost it takes to have that quality of animation. Even a company such as GAINAX will only put out a very good quality animation every couple of years(Gurren Lagann this year, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi before that, FLCL before that, etc). Then you have other companies which might only put out one or two series per year, such as BONES, which always has above average animation.

I suppose it almost comes down to being the luck of the draw, the length of the series, the style of the series, and the quality of the production company itself.

This is one thing that bothers me a bit. In general I think they should just animate some more damn frames and make the characters move. Sometimes though I understand it. Large battle scenes is where I see this most often. Like showing two armies clashing, it will be just a really big stationary picture with the camera zoomed in slowly panning across. Animating 20 people fighting 20 other people at a time would be quite the challenge I'd imagine. Would still be nice to see though.

I will agree as well that the quality of animation is not good in some animes.

Yeah week visual effects bother me a lot. In eva episode 24. If you seen it there is one scene that is completely motionless for at least a minute. That was perfect, it built so much tension in a already tense scene. The robot moving wouldn't have even close to the same effect.

I definitely agree here. Most of the long running Shonen fluctuate in quality depending on the scenes. I'll go with Xero's example with Bleach. Some of the sequences were just insane, but 2 episodes later, the character's faces look distorted to hell and their movement is really clunky (I remember outright laughing in one scene where Chad's face was just...).

And the entire "panning across the screen and maybe they won't notice it's a still frame >>;" thing is a bit annoying as well. Nothing comes to mind, but I have noticed it often. Cartoon-y you say? I understand what you mean, but even a relatively simple looking cartoon style can really be pulled off well with the right company.

    Then again it's Gundam Seed.

Wow - I guess a couple other people have noticed these things. I figured maybe I was being too picky or something.

I still find myself attracted to the animations that are quality - such as Gin-Roh.
    THAT is some quality animation.

I guess it comes down to the bottom line - MONEY. I just hope that with Anime's popularity at an all time high in America / Canada - we don't get flooded with sub-par animation - bascially produced as fast as possible for a hungry market. That cheapens things, imho.

I Disagree. I think what it comes down to is the fact that 90 % of Anime studios now? Use Computers to animate their products, The older titles which you mentioned? are all Cellshaded which produces an older feel and better quality Ainimation.

It has nothing to do with Money, rather Technology.

I find that some Animes have low quilty of animation especially the older ones (Escaflowne, Oh my goddess Trigun) However this low quality does not bother me if the storyline is good.

On the other hand some like DBZ which have poor animation and no storyline can't get away with it.

Generally newer Animes have far better animation and newer CGI affects and computer manipulation have greatly improved the overall look and feel of Anime. Mostly poor animation and scenes where there is no movement are put in to cut costs but again if this adds to the mood and storyline of an anime then the producers can be let off.

That's an interesting point about technology being different. I think I like cell shading better than the "flash" animation in popular use right now..
