An Age-Old Question (Literally!)

Yup. This is literally an age-old question! How would you react if you learned that one of your favorite members turned our to be younger than yourself? Or perhaps a member who seemed very intelligent? Then they come out and say, “Well... I’m only thirteen.” Would you treat them differently? Would you censor what you say to them? Do you even think things should be censored even though they might’ve handled a mature situation like it before well? I know I know... a lot of questions, but I’m curious.

I’ve finally become trusting of this forum to the max (I mean it's been a year already XD!). I’m openly now saying that I’m only thirteen myself. Hiding my age from everyone was hard to do. I had to take into consideration what I said about my school, the amount of sensitivity I had to questions similar to this, and so on and so forth. I’ve rarely told my age to anyone on the Internet, for the fear of being rejected. Then again, I’m not surprised that people would be a little opposed to talking to thirteen year-olds. They’ve sure proven their “intelligence” on the Internet. I mean, they’re notorious for being the n00bs of the forum! But now I’m rambling, I’m only looking for a discussion on the questions above.

This is an interesting thread.
I wouldnt treat anyone younger than me different, I see them the way I have been before and after.
I wouldnt censor things, they'll eventually be introduced to everything we talk about.
Age doesn't matter to me, the personalities do though.

-no i would not treat on or "censor' anyone (depends if under 10 then yes) however Cypress you are a teenager and so am I so i would not treat you any different than anyone one else in our "age group" and as our conversation have gone you should already know this I don't treat or will i treat any different based on your age.

and I, personally, agree with Gizoku. Age doesn't matter to me, but personalities do.

I wouldn't treat them any different either.I don't care about age.Like sasuke.kakashi said,it's personality that matters.You can be intelligent and mature at almost any age.That's how I see it.

I would probably be like omg xD! but then everytime I meet people online they are older than me no matter ow old I am o.O Someday I'm going to be like 80 and be like whats your age on some forum and they will probably say 90 XDD

Lol. Cyduck is now public with her age. I didn't know that. xD I remember back when I thought that Pengin was 17, back when we were really getting to know each other - I'd say toward the end of November 06'. She's quite the mature young lady..at least in the senses of intelligence, opinion, expression, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, handling herself online, etc. Once I got her age out of her, I wasn't drastically surprised actually; but that's only because that situation was...unconventionally brought about. Lol. But I didn't treat her differently really. Once she became cool with herself a lil more, I grew to respect her more.

Which leads me to say...it is ridiculous as to the number of girls that I have befriended and come across that I thought were my age or older..and turn out to be 3, 4, 5, or 6 friggin' years younger than me. I rarely...if ever...have mistaken a guy for be far wiser beyond his years here. I can't even think of anyone. o_O But the girls...I'm like...wth man? Jailbait, all of them. =P You think you're dealing with a 17 or 18 year old, and they end up being 12, 13, 14..15...its killer, man. There are sooooooooooooooo many examples here.

Aozora/Ed is 12....I mean, what in heaven's name?! How can she be 12? When she first started, I could definitely tell she was 12, because she didn't start on the best foot with everyone and seemed noobish. But now, you can't tell at all. She has such a sharp wit, and is so mature..how could you think she was 12 unless she told you or you saw a pic?

I thought Dottie was seriously like...17. She's so cool, mature, intelligent, witty..all that same jazz. And then...I found out she was 13 (at the time). That was one of the most mind blowing "WTF?!" moments I have ever, had man.

However, Eliano Levanos/Angel...THAT was the biggest shocker. -.-;;. There I was, when I was 17, thinking not only that she was this radical girl who incredibly funny and intelligent, but also that she was my age. But was I wrong. Off by 3 whole years. I think I needed a defibrillator once I found out. I mean...how could I have ever guess? x.o;; She's more mature and interesting then girl's my age age beyond. Man, this stuff is crazy. xD

And then there are Ophie/Bri, Sune/Maddy, Zyco, Aniek, Becky/cfa, Emily (at times..lol), Bucky Katt...Suko (sometimes, too =P)...yeah, too many. ~_~


Now, as for myself...beyond the intense flirtation in the past and the prying eyes that linger with that, I've been seen as pretty mature for my age - either mature enough to be the age I am, or older. Some people have mistaken me for a 19, 20, 21, 25...even a 30 year old, based on looks and the way I carry myself. xD

Personally, I think it's rather amazing at just how much girls can mature faster than boys in some regards. Throughout my life, not just in recent years, I've met many who could be considered to be vastly more mature than their age might indicate. Though, beyond even these, I've met some who I've had the good fortune to become friends with, who, in my opinion, go beyond even that.

...It's tough keeping up with them sometimes. v_v

Back to the topic at hand though.

Like others have said it before me, I respect a person's maturity and personality; I don't intentionally hold myself back just because they may be a little young and inexperienced dealing with the world. After all, for many of them, it's best that they start stepping out into the reality that they'll eventually face one day, and I think it's often for the best that people don't hold back for their 'sake'.

Wow, this thread filled up quickly - and most of what can be said has been said - including the "girls mature faster than boys" fact.

Personaly I don't care if you are 13 or 30, what matters is how you conduct yourself, how you respond, give opinions, etc.... Those things speak more about a person than their age can.

Age difference shourent mather. A person may be thirt teen and be a great person while another person may be seven teen and a very terrible person. Thats the way I see it.

If someone is able to carry out a logical conversation, then that's what I'll do. However, doing this through a computer screen is a LOT easier than doing this in real life. All you have to do is read words on a screen, not hear the high pitched voice of a 13 year old.

This is so true, on the net you also have the time to think about what you say, so you can give it a few thoughts before you actually say something and appear smart.

But last summer I was looking through the "post your picture" thread and I was astonished to find out that people like Ophie, Dottie, Tsuna and a lot of others were so young... But there I'm taking looks into account

But when in chat it's a whole other thing, you have to be quick in your replies and you can sound stupid very quickly.

Based on that I can say that Ao (Aozora or Ed) is quite mature for her age. She's a bright kid and witty to boot.

I don't tend to treat a person differently after I find out how old they are, but then again you do have to watch out you don't throw out any too mature statements out there.
