Because you are at school to learn and not to play games and do other things. This may sound stupid but i think this is the reason.
my school is worse they have this site blocked- i guess it's so we don't muck about

Um....sites are blocked at schools because people think that you'll be distracted by the allure of free internet stuff.....Oh and they think you'll go on "Immoral sites"......Why don't you just use a proxy site to get around them like eveyone else....?

Well, you're using the school's network. If you are doing something illegal, you're not going to be the one punished (Not severely anyways) but it will be the school that will get the consequences. So the Network Administrators try to prevent the from happening by limiting the amount of access a student has.

Because your school doesn't believe in students taking responsibility for their studies.
Hey look, Japan made a movie about me!
Not to mention they haven't realized the futility of it all.
In where I live the district school board had noticed last year(I was in 8th grade) that the main reason why kids in my school, and all the other ones, went on the computers at school was because so that they can play games and go on YouTube and forums and such instead of going on educational websites. So they banned a whole bunch of websites. That may be the reason for you, too.
My school has them too
And let me tell you ours is annoying!
It has a bloody dog that pops up and tells you cant go there >O
I WANNA KILL THAT DOG!
Anywho
Blockers block a bit too much, apparently, google images is bad.
And it blocks wiki too
Almost every website you get from a search is blocked, it hinders your ability to research, and makes your interweb slow as hell.
I don't see how forums are bad =/ some maybe, but this one isnt, and its blocked

Obviously, they don't want you to be distracted. They want the computers to be freed up, so that people that actually have work can use them. Annnd they don't want you visiting naughty sites. :P Pretty simple, no?
What is the first thing kids do when they're given the chance to go do research in the library or work on a project in the computer lab. MySpace/forums/e-mail/YouTube/ect (I've never heard of students looking up porn on the school comps before, though. They must save that for the public library here ;P). They do everything but the thing they were supposed to work on.
I think it's just a temptation thing. Even though kids can crack through the blocked sites anyway, it puts somewhat of a restriction on it.
*Cough*
8th grade, all time time
And the reason everything is blocked?
Well, 3 reasons.
-You aren't trusted to do your studies.
-Sadly, at least half the people who go to your school SHOULDN'T be trusted to do their studies.
-The school administration doesn't want you to have fun.
BUT those blocks are so pathetic anyone with a flash drive can get past it.
Well, it's funny. They know about that...so my school put settings so that non-default applications wouldn't run. Well, we got past that already by naming it the same as something that already exists. Such as StarCraft.exe to WinWord.exe.
And even without flash drives, we used to have infrared ports for file tranfer, or since we're all on the same network, wireless tranfer by the use of Start>Search>Computers.
Then there's the firewall. We couldn't do too much about that with access to Internet Options in IE...so using the above method, got Mozilla FireFox, and used proxies to access other networks. "Tunneling" I believe?
Then there's the fact that a small few know the Admin Pass...since a certain girl stole her mother's pass. And two years ago, I was able to access the Command Line. That opened everything.
Yeah..there's a way around almost everything.

Hey Kam! Nice to see ya! XD
Anyways. My school sucks, but I know how to get through a few of their blocks, thankfully this site isn't blocked, or I would kill them(Well maybe just threaten... but then I'd get in trouble, be sent to ISS and well... if I missed choir I'd be happy, stupid teacher...)
Anyways, There was a site I used to be on, and well since photobucket is blocked, I couldn't post on it. That was hilarious though...the things that are missing. Not to mention I did something, and I wanted to put it on a powerpoint, a pic, anyways my teacher didn't believe that if it was on photobucket I did it. So annoying.
I'm studying in physics department in Turkiye. I can't search some keywords in google at my university like "uranus" because it contains "anus". Stupid IT.

While in Junior high, we had a blocker which would pick up links in the site that would draw the student to other sites. If you went on an anime site and there was 18+ content links it wouldn't even allow you to reach the site that held the link in the first place.
Now in highschool it's only google images which is blocked (which is very odd 0.o ) But if you go to google france. google.fr and use their image links they allow it xD
Stupid.
