Movie "300" Angers Iran

Well, seems the new movie, witch is a good movie imo, has set some anger off Iranians. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17599641/?GT1=9145 has more on it.

Iran's are saying that in the movie, the Greek vs Persians is a insult to there cutler and is creating/provokes hatred towards them as well.

Tbh, I thought nothing of it, its a movie.... But it seems to have upset them quite amount. Needless to say this movie wont be airing over there...

Wasn't most of the Persian empires of antiquity based around the fertile crescent? I believe Ctesiphon was on the Tigris (or Euphrates), and it was the capital under the Parthians or the Sassanids. Hah, I don't see the Iraqis complaining.

But the point of the movie isn't to bash Iranians, so while I can see how it would be offensive, I don't think it justifies this level of anger.

By the way that movie, orcish ninjas aside, was so awesome I almost cried.

Yes it was.

Aside from the subplot, and some of that feminist stuff, it was great.

Also, history is history, people need to stop getting butt-hurt over everything.

Of course, that's where the problem is. 300 is not a movie that was designed with historic accuracy in mind. The Iranians wouldn't care if the Persians were shown as upright, morally correct people who fought valiantly, but they weren't shown as such. They believe that they aren't being portrayed according to history, and that's one of the reasons they're angry.

As for the topic yeah I can see why they are upset but its just a movie. Its ment to entertain not tell a histoical event acuratly.

Can anything be done nowadays without offending SOMETHING?? I swear, it won't be long before in order to get anything published it must be submitted through the following ministries for approval:

The Ministry of Gay
The Ministry of Women
The Ministry of Judaism/Christianity/Islam/Hindu/Aum Shinrikyo
The Ministry of Feelings
The Ministry of Minorities
The Ministry of Friendship and Happiness

So in other words, the only thing we will see in the future is Care Bears, only every care bear will be a different race, so maybe Grumpy will be a white carebear, Braveheart will be a Native because his name sounds like one, Trueheart can be African for some reason, maybe Sharebear can be asian. And No Heart can be this old white guy in a wheelchair (because broken people are still people and can do what anyone can do lol!) who's evil goal is to restore freedom of speech and expression to the kids of earth. At the end of every show, the carebears can dance and sing the Internationale under a giant flag with a SICKLE AND HAMMER ON IT

So wait...your telling me that there is a movie out there that managed to anger an entire country? I HAVE to see it now. Funny thing is that I've heard nothing but good things about it. I'm not usually a fan of historically inacurate movies (I usually hate westerns because the Native Americans are almost always the bad guys) but I feel compelled to see this one.

Oh, and don't forget the Ministry of People Who Couldn't Get Their Own Ministry. They complain more than anyone.


As for the Iranian reaction...I won't really comment until I actually see the movie. From what the article said, they may have a legitimate beef. Plus in todays world it can be very difficult to be of middle eastern descent when you consider the way that many people view that region. This only helps to feed certain negative stereotypes about the Arab community. They already have that terrorist stigma attached to their race and now (from what the article says) this movie may cause some people may view them as "demons, without culture, feeling or humanity, who think of nothing except attacking other nations and killing people".


Besides, it's not like this movie is about two fictional countries doing battle with one another. I's based on an actual battle (fantasy version) in their history. So it is unsderstandable that they may be a little upset that they are not only the bad guys in the film, but that they are shown as being basically evil. I guess the closest thing I can think to compare it to is any WWII based movie with Germans. Those movies can make it seem like EVERY German person was a Nazi. The Iranians obviously feel that this movie pts them in a similar light.

I don't think that it's our place to really justify or dismiss their concerns about the way that they feel they are portrayed in the movie. But while I feel that you should respect the opinions, feelings and views of others I don't think that you should allow yourself to be ruled by them. That said, I plan on seeing the movie at some point.
