What are Zebras?

I don't want to sound stupid or anything but, what exactly are zebras? are they white horses with black stripes, or black horses with white stripes? Or are they a horse with a continous stripe pattern? My brother asked me this today, and I don't really know. Little riddles like this keep rattling in the back of my mind.

the other thing you should note is that the stripes on a zebra don't go all the way around.

i would say that its a white hourse with black or brown stripes

i also sometimes don't think zebras are horse at all, they are rather shorter and look like donkeys if you ask me
