You don't have to like one or the other, I mean I like a few hip hop groups and a few rock groups.. but there are so many sub-genres in each of these genres! I like hip hop; as in basic hip hop, I love the use of sampling and DJing in music but I'm also not a fan of hugely hardcore death metal and screamo.

I don't resepct comments like hip hop has no lyrical or poetic value because that statement is false; you can't be very cultured in hip hop (I mean REAL hip hop, not necissarily the main stream stuff) otherwise you wouldn't have said that. Lyrics are lyrics, they can be used in any genre of music; they are just used differently whether spoken, sung or screamed..

Myself; I like most things, even a but of alt. folk or alt. country. As long as it is happy..

I feel the same way as you. Its alright if hip-hop/rap isn't your thing, but poepl saying that all hip-hop is pointless, shallow, and devoid of any depth...I hate that so much. I keep telling people to actually listen to other artists, beside mainstream rappers like 50 Cent. If you take the time to look, or maybe even go underground, you can find some really compelling material.

For me personally i would have to choose rock, however that's a pretty tough choice lol, hip hop can be quite incisive too,for it all depends on the mood and moment.

i like both... but i prefer rock because hip hop is getting boring.. rock songs have deeper meanings while hip hop just talks about life in the "ghetto" or parties and stuff im not exactly interested in... so yeah rock for me!

Good lord! I'm liking your thinking!! I think a lot of mainstream music, whatever genre can lack substance in lyrics and originality; it is really, like TAF101 says, the more underground, smaller bands that are innovative; that is why I am not such a fan of mainstream kinda rap that has this 'ghetto' image and I prefer hip hop that has clever production to it; but I would say the same applies to any rock music I listen to!

Im not such a huge fan of Linkin Park but I do admire them because of the element of hiphop that they've mised with their more recent stuff, its not my cup of tea but its very original and better than a lot of other music out there.

Has anyone heard of Dangermouse? His 'Grey Album' is proper super, he's mixed the Beatles 'white album' with Jay-Z's black album to make a rather amazing record.

Yikes, spammers ahoy. Guys cut it out up there before you're bad repped or worse, just a friendly reminder. Anywho, back on topic I prefer Rock for no obvious reason really. I just like the sound of rock, the energy and emotion of the music really gets to me sometimes. However that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a good Hip Hop song. Like some of the guys have already said, I follow a simple philosophy when it comes to music. "If it's pleasing to the ears, I'll listen to it." In fact most of my favourite songs come from mixed genres. A good example was the Linkin Park, Jay-Z Collison Course collaboration. I thought those songs were amazing. A music lover can't live on one genre alone is what I like to believe.
