Cancer and cancer charity (pls read this)

How many people here know somebody who has died from, or survived cancer? Anybody here personally deal with it?

My grandmother died 3 years ago from breast cancer, and my girlfriends mother died when she was nine from the exact same thing.

I'm asking because I volunteered to do this thing called Relay For Life and Luminary Ceremony ... in a nutshell you buy for five dollars a candle with a note on it dedicating it to whoever lost their battle with cancer.

The goal is to line the main street of the base here, both sides, in candles. At nightfall, we light each of our respective candles, then start at one end of the road and walk/jog/run down to the end of it. It's a pretty spectacular sight. The army and especially CFB Petawawa here tremendously supports this event and on average roughly 5000 people turn up for it - pretty good for a base of 6500.

Anyhow, because I believe in this cause, if anybody wants to have a candle on this street, by all means tell me in this topic. No more than a few though I mean it's five bucks a candle and I can't afford a whole bunch here. I will take pictures of your candle at the event and post them up or send them to you. I put aside some money for this and am willing to spend more but I'm not going to put blanks on candles, the least that could happens is a name go on one.

So try not to be shy, PM me if you want with the name of the deceased or survivor. This is a good cause, if you don't already support it if you can.

Gangsters aren't more important. I guess people don't like to show their hearts or something like that.
You know your offer in the PM I sent you I'll allow you to get a candle and I want you to dedicate it to the young children who have cancer becuase its not fun never being allowed to play and go outside becuase you're at the hospital.
Its even worse when you know you won't live your life long like you expected.

I have sympathy for those that have had to deal with cancer. There's no amount of pain that I can imagine for those afflicted by cancer. Truth be told, I haven't had any close family or friends that have died from cancer... It's usually done by fatal injury or old age. I just don't hear about cancer all that often for it to make a large impact in my life.

I'm sure there are tons of people here that knew or know someone that has had to live with these afflictions. They're not without heart -- sometimes, it just takes a great deal to move what's inside.

Fortunately, I've been blessed enough to not have lost a loved one by cancer, but those who have, my condolences.. And thanks Sagat, for being nice enough to do this. That's very admirable of you.

I'm sorry people don't have hearts. I'm sorry that people can't even take a care in the world to think about others. Most people either think to much of themselves or don't care.

I have a Grandma and a defacto Father who died from cancer, but seriously, it had only been 5 hours in the middle of the day between you opening the thread and you declaring it dead. We do have lives, homework, ect. Peak hours round here seem to be about 8pm-11pm eastern.

But I have one for myself, one for gf's mom, three soldiers put their names in, one for fallen, and hopefully one for sasaki and manhatten.. I will need the names of the deceased though, so I can get them engraved on the candle, as well as your real names.

Not too bad for second day in this drive I suppose.

I don't know anybody who's died from cancer, but I just got some information on this program today, and it's a good cause, so I plan to go to the event in my area. If they have the Luminary Ceremony in my area, I think I'll participate in that, too.

I sympathize with and would like to send out some serious love to those who have been affected by this wretched disease.
I am the son of lovely lady who was diagnosed with colon cancer, now spread to her liver, about a year ago. She just recently decided to stop all treatments. The doctors have given us an estimate of just a few weeks...<sigh>
It causes excruciating pain to those close to the afflicted and, obviously, the afflicted themselves- its unbearable.

I can't remember well if a close relative of mine died with cancer, perhaps when i was still a kid. Anyhow, good deeds pow...Your such a kind hearted-person to volunteer. Keep it up and you'll have a blessful life.

My dear Friend Cat_demon (some of you may know it some may not) fought with a cancer that was supposed to kill her, she was actually laying in her death bed, she was about 10 at the time. The doctors said she had less then a day to live, so i sat with her when she was suppose to die. About 2 hours of just being with her, the doctors came in and said that they had one last chance to save her, but the operation was a 50/50 chance that she could die or still have the cancer. I practically jumped for the opurtunity, the operation ran at about 15k, she was taken away and put into the operation room, after about 7-8 hours of pacing and punching the wall, she finally came out. I was over joyed when they said they had probably cured her. They had to run some tests on her (like blood) and I had to wait another hour, it was about midnight when she came out. Since her family had important things to do i decided to stay with her during the night. At about 4am I woke up to a long beep noise, to look up and see that Crystal(cat_demons name) heart beat stop, I ran out of the room looking for a doctor or anybody to help her, when they went into the room it was 40 minutes later they came out and said "We lost her..im sorry", I looked at them with doubt in my eyes not willing to believe it, I walked into the room to see that she was no longer alive, I began to cry knowing she had left this world. I began to walk out of the room to call her family and friends, until I heard something it sounded like a groan or a whimper, I turned around to see her open her eyes and smile at me
