If you could only have one format, what will it be? Would you like to have your anime in a nicely done dubbed form (english) or basic Japanese with subtitles? Aside from you answer give us your personal view to why you want that form.

Japanese with subtitles. Every anime that is dubbed is completely raped in my opinion.
Do I look like I'm in the freakin' mood..?
i prefer subtitles because i like its original.....btw, dubbed aren't usually that good...they're not that accurate
~thanks to thornwillow~
subs of course ... can't stand dubbed anime (except Italian ones)
ugh i do not like dubbed anime its just sounds so different when u compare sub and dub and the dubbed ones sound stupid
Depends on the anime. Some dubs are done in such a quallity that I prefer them over the original Japanese. Other times the setting is much better with western voices.
A classic example would be Trigun. Trigun is a Sci-fi western, and you simply cannot have a western without American voices. Well, you can, but western voices sound way better in place. I also found the English Vash to be more amusing then the Japanese. Especially whenever he panicked.
Another example would be Full Metal Alchemist. Everybody is always complaining how the dubbers can't pronounce the Japanese names, in this series it is the reversed. The Japanese can't pronounce the English correctly, with the dubs the names are finally correctly pronounced.

it depends on the anime like fruits basket is really good dubbed but D.N.Angel isn't...
And that's how I know not to listen to your opinion.Japanese with subtitles. Every anime that is dubbed is completely raped in my opinion.
Dubbed for me, I could care less how accurate to the original it is. It seems like a lot of times the english version had the dialog re-edited to make it better than the japanese. But of course I'm not a flithy fno either.
If you're all too preoccupied with how the voices sound and not the anime itself then you're not a real anime fan. Delete all the subs off your computer, you're not worthy. Oh, and I also understand that some dubs replace story elements. True, but you're dwelling too much on whether Naruto is a Ninja or Shinobi, or if Spike is a Cowboy or Bounty hunter.
All The Ways You Wish Could Be? That's me
dont dub it the mouths look all funny and scary
and the voices are weird
unless your five and cant read fast enough then subs
samurai deeper kyo!!!
i love it so much!
I think it really depends on the company that brought it over and who did the dubbing. Becasue Funimation really does a good job at dubbing their anime. I have not yet seen a funimation anime that has not had a good dub. Where on the flip side ADV films does not do a very good job dubbing. The mouth flaps are totally off if you watch it dubbed, and the voices dont match the characters.
So tahts why I think it reAlly depends on the company that produces it.

It does not really matter to me. Of course some dubs are very badly done, and some subs are very badly done. I find myself switching between dubs and subs all of the time. Subs are not always better. Anime such as Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Mononke Hime, and others sound better in english than they did in Japanese. I find that plot and characters should be more important to the viewing of an anime than the sound of the voices.

I agree with you... I like the subtilted ones more becaue most western voices suck...Originally Posted by red storm

.... you might want to re-read my post, I do not put either above the other, instead I said that it all depends on the setting of the anime and the quallity of the original/dubbed.

Everyone's got a point here so let's keep it cool. I for one would prefer subbed over dubbed anytime but not 100% of the time. I think 2 out of 10 titles I wouldn't mind watching in dubbed format because what are important are the emotion and the essence of the characters being preserved. It's a known fact that western voice actors sometimes don't get it. For example we see characters animated in gut wrenching pain or screaming at the top of their lungs to emphasize agony yet when you hear it in dubbed form it's like they're getting a massage or they sound more like they stubbed a toe. A lot of anime in Cartoon network are good examples of poor dubbing. Gundam-W, Yu Gi Oh, Beyblade to name a few.
What really makes me dislike dubbing as a whole aside from the poor voice rendition is the known fact that they usually change or replace the Japanese music that go with it. I watched Dragonball-Z both in dubbed & subbed and the music was sooo forgettable in dubbed because it sounded more like the music came from an old mortal combat game. They shouldn’t do that to an anime because I believe that when you do that you turn it to a plain cartoon or it’s like eating popcorn with no salt and butter.
There are some anime I always look forward to watch in dubbed. Ranma ½ is one of them. Even though I enjoy watching it in subbed I’ll prefer dubbed because all of the characters talk so fast the punch line to their jokes are usually lost in the subtitles. In Ranma 1/2 casting is not bad either because you can recognize the distinctiveness of each character through their voices like Shampoo for example. Bad dubbing usually happens when one voice actor tries to do more than two characters. The disadvantage of subtitles usually occurs when they don’t translate what the Japanese actors are saying for compression purposes. How many instances have you seen long dialogues in Japanese subtitled in a few words? Too many I guess so dubbed has a slight advantage here.
So unless you can understand, speak and write in Japanese there won’t be a need to choose from dubbed or subbed right?

I would go with subbed. It's basic, original, and the voices don't suck so bad. ^_^
it really depends...i usually listened to the american versions until 2 years ago...i can stand most american dubbing, i dont know why everyone has to freak out about it, the voices all dont suck that badly, now for things that i first heard the japanese version then i heard the english, i can understand. like:
yami no matsuei, the voices there are...meh, ok.
Gravitation: the voices suck SO bad and i refuse to watch it in english.
Naruto: meh, could be changes here and there, but trust me they could have done a WHOLE lot worse.
and in my opinion, dont get mad at me, but it seems american voice actors show alot more emotion and diffrence in their voices than japanese voice actors...but dont get me wrong ok? there are MANY subs that i would kill to meet the voice actor for.

Such is the case for AIR. I would much rather see it subbed than dubbed. They do have dubbed versions which sound very off and the voice over actors con not pronounce the names right.
I think it is interesting to hear the Japanese rather than English.
That is my opinion.
