Spending too much time online?

I've been thinking long and hard about this lately. How much is too much time on the internet? Is there a such thing as being online too much? I mean in general too, not just here at AF. You may spend your time looking at porn (and please don't elaborate on that if you do), or IM people on different continents, or play A LOT of arcade/rpg games, or even just browse around. However you spend your time online, does it affect your social life? What kind a person prefers the glow of the screen to actual human comfort? Is it "pathetic" to find solace in a computer?



This is not a "You know your spending too much time online when...." thread. I just want to know your views on this. How do you know when you're spending too much time online, and what are the conseuences of doing so?

i spend much to much time online and its starting to affect my life, i am gaining wieght again after i had lost nearly 30 pounds, i have to stop comming on so much and go out and look for a job so that i can earn money - he sighs - but giving what the interent is like giving up smoking its damn hard, but i stopped smoking three days ago so i can eaily stop using the internet for 14+ hours each day.

i find that i just come on here to check up people have posted and post myself and its stupid, i should be spending my day light hours exercising and being outside, but no i sit at the computer posting stuff on this site or chatting in AF chat, i have to give it up sooner or later.

so it doesnt really affect my social life at all
but if i didnt have one of those deals with my internet company where you pay a fixed rate every month no matter how much time youre online then it might be too much

well I do spend a lot of time now.....really a lot cause I'm very extreme free now a days...all friend are aready in college or in the army....as for me...I have to wait to be in the army so....that is why I have too much free time...thus I spend too much time online.....but I don't gain weight for some reason...instead I'm losing weight...X__x....which is not good....anyway I don't spend that much time online last time....only hand out with my friend to the cyber cafe or drink something outside....and what is the effect u ask me for being too much online?it is messing up with my sleeping habit.....that is I stay online from 11p.m a.m until 5 or 6a.m and that is only when I free...and I sleep from 6.a.m to 3p.m...hack I don't even know when is the time to sleep anymore....and yes...online is addictif and can effect u in a lot of way....but I very much doubt if when bring a good effect only bad....

There was a time when I would stay non-stop on the computer from the time I got home from school, to the time I went to bed. That was the most I've ever been online. I know I couldn't do that anymore.

I've managed my online time pretty well now. I don't feel the need to be on every single minute. I come on, check a few things, read my PMs, read my e-mails, and I'm done. Good enough.

I like being on the computer, I just don't like to be on alot. Anymore.

ha, i never spent this much time on the comp until i came to this place, AF. And once you meet cool ppl its even harder
It does bug me though.....I think if you make time to actually have a life and do things AWAY from the PC then its ok. I still go out with my friends, and i have a job, and i spend time out doors, but still not as much as i use to.
Balance is key, its a bad feeling( to me) to spend all your freetime on the comp, its like you dont have control...im still trying to balance it out.
right now i spend about 4 hours a day on the comp during the week,( two hours at school 2 hours at home) and even more on the weekend. sometimes the whole day will go by and i'll realize that i spent it on the comp. ugh.
If it wasnt for the fact that i have a big crush on someone online then it wouldnt be like this though, so i blame it on him. lol
but yeah, i understand how all you people feel, with being online to much...

The internet is the life.

A lot of people who don't know me and come over to see my roommates think I'm a hermit because I never come out of my room. I'm usually on the computer, on the internet. If not, I am watching anime, drawing, or writing. Sometimes it gets in the way. I don't want to do my homework because I'd rather read fanfiction or post on the forums. I usually stay up way too late because the pull of the internet is strong to me.

Actually, I have friends, have had boyfriends, and I try to get my work done. I'm not fat or anything either, and not getting that way. I just value my solitary time. I usually hang out with my friends during the day, and then spend the whole night on the net. Sometimes I post here instead of studying for exams...which is bad, but I try not to do that too often. So, yes, I have a life and I enjoy it.

Personally, I don't think it matters how long a person is on the internet. What is important is that the person is healthy and enjoys themself. It is when you let the internet become your whole life and let everything else go that it becomes a problem.

When you miss a night, or multiple nights of sleep, then you are online too much. I'm only on for 2-3 hours a day.

Im usally online when I have nothing to do....which is usally quite often. Im not online when Im with people...which is usally only on the weekends. It just kills time...I noticed that Ive been getting into alot of webcomics...since I dont have much money to go and buy myself new books (cause Im not a big TV person...Id much rather read or be online and have conversations with people). If youre one of those people who'd rather be online talking to their online bf/g then hang out with their real friends...then there is a problem

I'm online pretty much, this happens when I've got nothing else to do, or I wanna chat with my friends via MSN Messenger. When I've lost my inspiration to draw I'm online. Now that I found AF, my online time has been going up, since this is a cool place and the people on this board are very friendly. ^_^ My friends keep complaining how I always sit in front of the computer screen, but I don't mind. I love to read fan fictions and the best source for them is internet, that is one of the things I do while I'm online. And I don't have so much friends here, the people are pretty different and they have some what different taste in things. For example, since I'm a huge fan of anime and manga, we hardly find anything to discuss about. Whenever I mention my interests or hobbies (drawing anime characters) they'll just say: "Really, isn't there anything else in your life??" Kinda sad, I'd love to spend time with them, but I'm not interested in hearing things like that. So, those are probably the reasons why I'm almost always online.

It's different for my roommates though. They are always, ALWAYS, on World of Warcraft and it pisses me off. Like if we all go out to get food or go to a movie, they always have to be home by 10 or whatever because of molten core raid on wow. It pisses me off so much. I hate that game with all my heart.

I'm online too much, I have one close friend and thats all, there is honestly nothing to do that interests me where I live.. Oi, ah lately I have been on for an average of 9 hours with the occasional break..

I Don't Spend To Much Time On The Internet And I'm Not In Denial I Usually On A Saturday I Spend Half The Day On Interney And Other Half On P2 Or All Day On Internet And No P2 Or Vise Versa And Personally I Love It.

i can only get on at school...so, i only spend 2 hours or less on a day ...when i visit my old town..i go to the library and sometimes spend up to 4 hours on...that's all i'm allowed to spend on the internet...i'm alot better about getting on than I used to be, though. Although, i do sometimes miss the computer....but i deal with it...i think we should all read more...that's how i pass the time ...sometimes...

It causes alot of problems. Expecially for me. I have stopped getting on as much to make sure the problems go away. Before I use to be online so much that it cut into my sleep hours. Not anymore though

The internet is really really addictive. If it's not the internet it's the computer itself. I'm so used to turning it on everyday, it becomes a habit. I spent my time surfing the net and doing pointless stuff when I could go and do my homework so I don't have to wake up at crack dawn to do it. It does effect my personal social life a lot. but it really depends on the person and what the hell you're doing on the internet. I did gain a couple of pound just sitting here about 6 hours everyday right after school and eating. I isolate myself from my friends at school because I feel like it and the need to punish myself. The internet has a lot to do with my life now and if I don't have internet/computer I would probably be really depress. Heck I talk more on the phone and msn then I talk in real life. I do find typing and reading messages more comfortable then talking in person. I guess you could say I'm a bit anti-social. I talk if I feel like I want to or if I just don't feel like being silent. So to warp this up, yes I do spend too much time doing useless stuff like this and I do have a messed up social life. I try to join little school organizations to kill some time and to get off the net and that helps a lot too. I'm busy on Mondays and a little on wnesdays after school now. I'm spending way to much time online. but for some reason, I manage to get my work done on time. And I do think finding solace in a computer is pathetic. And here's what I have to say about finding solace in a computer. Come on guys, spend some time with your boyfriend or girlfriend or something besides staying online for who knows how long.

Yeah, I do. I don't mean to though, I come on and my friends talk to me and I get caught up in a convo and then the next thing I know...it's midnight. But I still manage to have a healthy social life.
