What has happened to anime?

Okay, after about 30 min I have finally got through searching all 21 pages of this forum and have found nothing like this thread in there. I have been wondering this for quite some time now: What has happened to anime!?!? I am very dissapointed in the direction that I see anime going into. I am 18 years old, and I have been a fan of anime for about 13 years. Classics like Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Pokemon (although now I hate it I still must admit it is a classic) first caught my attention. Also, the movie Little Nemo. And those animes were somehting to behold! Now I see Inuyasha, Naruto, s-cry-ed, and othere being so popular. And I can't help but wonder why! Inuyasha seems to have the same storyline every episode and needs to end NOW!(no offense to fans of it) Naruto is okay if you have the subbed version, otherwise kill yourself if you are caught watching it. And s-cry-ed is just predictable. What has happened to unique storylines that I am so fond of? There are plenty of those out there, but they receive so little notice from most non-Japanese anime fans. Great animes like Paronoia Agent, Outlaw Star, Adori Days, Angels Adolescence (Burst Angel), and many others are unfairly overlooked. I know that some great anime is popular (like FMA), but there should be more recognized. I think we should stop glorifying Inuyasha and start watching FLCL! Those are the animes that have dared to be different!

If you don't like the animes that are popular here go to another forum... There are several different types of anime people... Most of the ones in these forums are the "Cartoon Network" people...

You should already be able to tell from the threads... "Inuyasha" and etc thread pages go up everyday while "Bleach" and etc thread pages go up every few weeks or so... (And other anime threads just die within a couple days.)

Anyways, my point is if you're unsatisfied, either go find another place or try to spark some interest in the hibernating "Caught up to whats showing in Japan" anime fans by starting up some good threads...

Anime is just like everything else on tv. It's kind of hard to keep things going without it sounding predictable or being done before. I wish there were more with unique storylines too but there isnt much we can do about it. Plus the popular animes are alot better than anything else that is on tv. Oh yeah Inuyasha really does need to just end.

Anime has progressed. Things change, and people don't always care for change. It's good to remember the days gone by, but don't let this stop you from looking to the present, and to the future. There are many good shows out today. As was previously mentioned, Bleach is increasingly popular, and I do enjoy it myself. Samurai Champloo was fairly recent, and also a very good show. It's all out there, you just gotta look.

No, Pokemon is not a classic. Yes, DBZ and Sailor Moon were classics, but hardly what I'd consider the prime of anime.

When someone says something is a "classic" it's HIS or HER own opinion... There is no set time frame for something to exist for it to be called a classic...

"I" think of "Astroboy", "Robotech" and Speed Racer" as classics...

before part of my post was removed I said sailor moon and pokemon and DBZ were the first to introduce anime to the mainstream. yes, I prefer Astroboy and Speed Racer to DBZ and Sailor moon, but without those two I doubt we would have had anymore anime in the states or anywhere else for that matter.
and by the way: you wouldn't consider me an anime veteran? well, that doesn't hurt me. remember you're only a self proclaimed god. so as much as you think your opinion is law, in reality...it isn't.

Oy, I consider them classics because they were some of the first anime I saw. Yes, I agree that Speed Racer and Akira are classics as well, as is Slayers, Zoids, Gundam Wing, Astro Boy, Ranma, etc. Now whether I like them or not is a different story. Really, I hate any Gundam, didn't like Astro Boy or and Zoids. But what is considered a classic is not the point of this thread. I want to know if anyone elso has noticed the steady decline in great anime that is widely known. For example, Outlaw Star was great, as is Samurai Champloo, Excel Saga, Chrono Crusade, Happy Lesson, Panyo Panyo DiGi Carrat, etc. Perhaps I shall start a thread on great underdog animes, but for now I'd like to hear some great widely known anime if you know any.

inuyasha should be stopped because the only true evil villain is naraku and there are no others except in the movies. it gets pretty dull when you talk about the same person in so many episodes.now what were you people saying?

I totally agree with ya m8! im 18, and an immense anime fan... but this is going too far! when i was around the age of 5, i saw my first anime... dragon ball... i loved it! ofc, with time my tastes changed... and with high speed, i have the opportunity to dl fan-subs... this is great... except for the fact of anime beeing held by the ankles and shaken the money out of its pockets... most good animes never get any attention... and the only good animes that make it to north america are either HORRIBLY dubbed, edited or are given a timeslot around 3 am...

now, i shouldnt complain... considering most of the animes i watch are fan-subbed... but now i cant even find any more good animes... because even on forums dedicated to anime, we are spammed with crap! in fact, i had made a thread about this a ways back... the responce? well... from others... it was very positive... with the exception of 1 or 2 ppl flamming me for using gundam as an example... from the admins? "shut the hell up you whiny SOB"...

obviously... said admin closed the thread and never gave any of the ppls points of view a second thought...

how many "who is hottest in Yu Gi Oh?" threads do we need? and why are the constructive conversations closed when the "which gundam is bestest?!!!!!!1111one" threads go on for ever?

During my entire time on this forum, i saw 2 escaflowne threads... i saw 1 akira thread... NO steamboy threads... NO howl's moving castle threads... i can go on and on... some of the greatest movies of the 1990s and 00 are going completely un-noticed even among otakus!

Hmmm, the problem has I see it is must people don’t know much anime outside of what is localized anime. The reason you are seeing more “junk” now is because local distributors are picking up any series they can get their hands on, whether its good or not. While this means we get more choices it also means we got to shift through the junk. Before anime became mainstream walking into a book store and asking for anime or manga would you get you a raised eyebrow and a “Oh you mean the Disney stuff yea its over there” or “Oh you mean 3D stuff like Toy Story, right?”. Now every book store you go in has some manga or anime (The second hand book store I go to sometimes has a romance manga section now). When anime was largely unheard of here we would see only the cream of the crop, the best stuff, the stuff that could sell (There is a lot of crappy anime from the 70s and 80s that no one likes to remember like Starship Troopers and Frankenstein). Now people have been given more stuff to choose to watch, stuff like FMA, Naruto, Inuyasha (Like EVERY anime this person has ever made it has gone on too long), and FLCL. There are a lot of gems out there, you just got to take the time to find them.

Sailor Moon , Dragon Ball Z, and Pokemon are classics only because they where shown on air in the US first(DBZ is not Classic, Dragon Ball is the stuff)
And just remember Japan has allot more to offer as far as anime goes.

it really is a shame that things cant be as well developed as project a-ko,little nemo,kikis delivery service and such...but i think anime has become much like recent horror movies...theyll come up with any random idea and drag it out as long as possible to make money. noone really cares about plot and storylines anymore...its about who can make what popular and sell usless toys to kids. *my opinion*

and what about the countless animes that HAVE been licencesed but dont even get time slots? Guu would b a good example... only the biggest anime fans in america know about guu... but u cant watch it... illegal to dl... and doesnt play.... are they TRYING to release only the crappy 1's?

Guu is being released soon by AN Entertainment (www.animenation.com). I don’t know what kind of treatment it will get but I can hope it will be decent (It will be hard for any english VA to get Guu or Hales voices right, Hale especially considering how fast he talks). It is a cult hit with anime fans but the transition to TV may be a bit difficult for this series, after all the blood and randomness can throw people off (the maid whose nose never stops bleeding when she is around Wendy). Who knows maybe if people enjoy BoBoBo so much they will start airing it on Adult Swim or something.

umm..correct me if I'm wrong but all those are licenced animes, ne.

Anyways, there are alot of interesting anime coming out every month...Its' just that not all of them are popular enough, I suppose, to grab your attention. If you want some new series PM me with the genre you enjoy and I'll recommend some. :P

In my humble opinion, the decline in anime has a good chance of recorvery. I belive two things have triggered the lower quality storylines that seem to apear.

1.)The Japanese recession: There has been a slight recession in Japan for a while now, purses are tight. This means that there is much less chance of an animation company approving an "experimental" project, rather, they will have a tendency to go with a sucessful formula and repeat it, that way they are almost garunteed to have a sucessful product.

And since i'm not a fan of what's usually popoular, I see the current crop of anime as rather rubbish. Of course there is always exceptions.

2.)The rise of digital and 3D animation: I think that with this new medium of animation, there will be a slight slump in anime as studios try and master this medium. Currently there are a LOT of anime out there which look damn pretty, but completely lack substance (Studio GONZO i'm looking at you). Until there is a point where 3D animation is no longer the "hot new thing", there will be a large crop of anime which are really just a 3D feast for the eyes.

So until these hurdles are leaped over, there will remain a slight decline in anime. At least in my opinion.

Yo, I have seen Chrono Crusade in English. It's pretty good, they got Greg Aryes to do Chrono's voice. And they got some people from Azumanga Daioh, Gunslinger Girl, etc. I love that show, I just wish I could buy the last DVD >.<.

anime has wide range of type... some for commercial objective, the uniquely presented art, or some that's just there to satisfy the consumer

so... ^^
i think some anime that have annyoying length are mostly for commercial objective;
while some that seem standart [nothing special] but prefered by majority are the one that specially made for consumer's enjoyment [the typical storyline or artwork that's on the trend or in consumer's mood];
for real anime with real value of art itself, is the one people view as originally and uniquely presented; they have their own attractiveness, originality, and value of worthness. from animes i have seen so far, some of these anime are the 'heavy', 'anigmatic', 'confusing', 'need high appreciation', etc type and not really always prefered by kids and/or teenagers [hard to understand or disgested as refreshing entertainment media], thus this kind of anime are not always go booming despite the nice quality it has

btw i love so much anime produced by Studio Ghibli, and i believe there are many that do, too ^^ [ah, sorry, am i out of topic?]
