    Default New Generation FPS

I was sittin' around and thinking about how much the FPS genre has changed over the time.. From the good old times of no vertical look Doom, to the ever so original quake and its quake-clones and onwards to the legacy that Half-Life founded..

    So..

I was wondering what all of you lads and ladies think of these changes?
As I recently upgraded my computer to an acceptable level, I've been tearing through the later release titles like a hot knife thru butter, I couldn't help my urge to ask all of you this question...

And of course, having actually played games like; Far Cry, Doom 3, Deus Ex: IW, etc.. would be a great bonus if you were to give reasons..

    Let hell break loose, Noki-

Default A random scrounging of thoughts

Well i'm sort of torn at the issues of FPS nowdays, there have been some incredible changes over times and at the same time changes which have me tearing my hair out. The worst of this is the notorious realisim bug.

When I got my copy of Doom 3 (A magnificent if a tad overrated game) and searched for mods, the rist I find is a "Chaingun Fix" which is set to make the Chaingun perform in a more realistic manner. The very first thought to come into my head is "ID software spent forever tweaking all the weapons to balance the game and some chump lemming obsessed with realisim decides to make a mod to tilt that balance... well done".

But I feel that although realisim is fun, sometimes it goes way to far from the escapist notion of videogames. And thats my big biff with FPS today.

Of course there are good things, the increased popoularity of Teamplay games encouraging a more social aspect to online playing. (My two favourite FPS of all time are Team Fortress in all its forms and the Battlefield series) and of course a strong arc towards story based gameplay and character interaction to add a new level of atmosphere outside of throwing a player in a series of dark cubes for him to shoot his way out. (Ala Half Life was sucessful at this and the original Deus Ex made it a true art form).

And thats all I have to say on that.

I have a bunch of friends who are really into FPS's. (Specifically Quake 3) They even got their High School to sign off on it and allow them use of the computer labs. I managed to attend one of these events when I was visiting Michigan. So I write as a gamer who hadn't played a PC FPS since Duke Nukem 3D.

The LAN party was fun, but most of the events fun was in the sense of community at the LAN party. 6 hours of Quake 3 would have bored the crap out of anyone in that room, if they were playing 1-player. Quake 3 was not a especially good game. It relied on the player to inject fun into it through their friends. This leads me to believe most of the FPS's nowadays would be unplayably boring if it were not for their Multiplayer Modes.

On the other hand, FPS’s like Deus Ex, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Timesplitters 2 are unspeakably awesome, with or without Multiplayer modes.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.

Hm, well.. Are any of you into some MultiPlayer FPS games?

There's quite a lot that's still fun, even after what seems to be endless hours..

    Like Tribes 2? :P

Well, I were asking of any you were into. Present time.

If you're still playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark (Two of the best FPS ever made for N64), I'd have to say I'm kinda worried :3

I think the changes are amazing, they really have evolved since the Wolfenstein 3D days. To think that now we have games of such high caliber and im sure all FPS fans out there are waiting for Nov 9th i think the date is, the release date of the long awaited Halo 2, tiss a holy day in this genre of gaming.

Hm, well.. Are any of you into some MultiPlayer FPS games?

Well, I'd be into them if:
    A) I could find my substep-sisters N64 (Not that I've looked...).
    B) If I had the couple of bucks needed to buy them.
Ehhh, I dunno if I'll stick around. We'll see.
