Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

There's Fritz the Cat. Only creator R. Crumb was very unhappy with Ralph Bakshi's film version of the character. It resulted in Crumb killing off Fritz in the comic.
Bakshi did a better job with American Pop.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
I've watched this. I thought Jessica Rabbit's design was too revealing.

Older animated movies? Aren't most animated movies for kids?

Most have a child audience in mind. Some are for both children and adults. But there are many animated films intended for an adult audience which can appreciate the movie for its artistic content.
Some anime examples:
The Wind Rises -- An animated biography of the designer of the Japanese Zero.
Grave of the Fireflies -- About a young boy raising his little sister during World War II. Sure the two main characters are kids, but this story is definitely to much for a young child to watch.
Miss Hokusai -- An animated biography of the daughter of a famous Japanese artist who struggles to find acceptance as an artist herself.
Millennium Actress -- The story of a young girl's lost love which lead her to a career as Japan's most celebrated film star.
Other adult animations from not too long ago:
The Breadwinner -- A young girl in Afghanistan poses as a boy to earn money to feed her family after her father is arrested and disappears. Again, a child protagonist, but it may be too much for young children to watch.
Persepolis -- Based on Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel and autobiography of her life in Iran.
Watership Down
Felix The Cat: The movie

No. In fact they started out mostly for adults back when the technology was new. Just as many anime are not for kids.
