I’m on the fence for this one. It has the elements of a good “dumb, but fun” anime, but it also has a weak storyline. There are plenty of zany characters, but they don’t always mix well with the darker elements of the series. For example, the season finale has a cliffhanger where the main female character is on the verge of being rapped. I assume she will escape next season, but the scene certainly is an uneven contrast to every other scene in that episode. So I have not totally made up my mind over Dan Da Dan.

Momo is a cute, or so we are told, and popular high school student who believes in ghosts. Okarun is a nerdy and unpopular high school student who believes in aliens. So naturally they become a team. Momo’s grandmother is a well-known psychic, and through her Momo has inherited certain powers. Okarun becomes possessed by a demon called Turbo Granny, and when he finally rids himself of her presence, he retains her powers. Turbo Granny ends up possessing a porcelain cat sculpture, so she stays around to lend a helping hand. And there are other heroes, aliens and demons to fill out the cast.

Too much of the plot centers on Okarun’s genitalia. It’s an on-going joke, but it gets old fast. I assume when the series ends, Momo will help Okarun test his organ to be sure it works properly.

I do like the characters. They all have their own idiosyncrasies. Emotions are played out very well, and you can feel the teenage angst and frustrations. The character design of the ghosts and aliens is well done. The animation is OK, but not out of the ordinary.

So there are a few things going for this series and a few things going against it. When season 2 comes, it should be easier to decide whether I give Dan Da Dan a thumbs up or not. Plus I want to see how Momo escapes.
