When I last wrote about The Quintessential Quintuplets, I noted that the season 2 finale left a bit of a gap in the storyline. The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie fills that hole.
It’s time for the school festival, and Futaro and the girls are at the end of their high school careers. The Nakano quints now have to decide on what they want to do with their lives, and just as importantly, what and who they are as individuals. Meanwhile, Futaro has to make the tough decision as to which of the five he wants to spend the rest of his life with.
The movie does have a rather interesting chronological order. The three days of the festival are repeated over and over again each time with the focus on a different sister. At first the narrative gets rather circular, spinning without direction. But eventually it does settle down. There are some very emotional moments, including the appearance of the sisters’ long lost biological father. Also, there is the conflict with their step-father who never figured out how to show his love.
The animation is disappointing. Usually anime movies have better animation than a series. There is not so much of a deadline, and there are more resources. Unfortunately, The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie looks like one long TV episode. They even use stills to cut costs, apparently.
But the movie is a good follow-up and wrap-up to the series. There are a few bits of profanity in the dialog, which the series did not have – at least in the English dub.
If you like sentimental stories, then you should enjoy The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie. It does tug at the heart.
