Shades of Sword Art On-Line! Another gamer gets caught in the virtual world. But Overlord does the sub-genre no harm.
Momonge, aka Ainz Ooal Gown, looks frightening enough. He’s a living skeleton! Well, actually he is the on-line alter ego of a video game creator. All other players have long abandoned the game, so our hero decides to spend one last day in his virtual world before shutting down for good. Only. . . . Surprise! He can’t log out of the world. He is unable to call up his controls. To make matters even more confusing, he finds himself, his castle, and his servants all in a strange new land.
Ainz must learn about this new land, so he disguises himself as an adventurer. While his character was designed as a villain, Ainz finds himself the defender of the weak, aided by his loyal staff of demons, vampires, elves, and what-have-you. His battles are those of mind and strategy, as well as strength.
Overlord is an enjoyable series. There are three more seasons to watch, which I will get to by and by. Helping to move the plot along, we get well defined and interesting supporting characters. The was no slacking in writing the scripts. Watch as Ainz' human and on-line personalities clash – somewhat. I hope we see more internal conflicts in season 2 through 4.
