Forums; social media or no?

Do you consider forum pages to be in the same category as social media? Obviously there are differences, however they feel the same to me. You post your thoughts and opinions, you make up your profile, you can privately chat with other members.
What do you guys think?

It is a form of social media. There is even media that can be posted while we're chatting. Nifty but forums aren't what they were before. Scratch that. Forum traffic has slowed tremendously with the rise of other social media platforms. Sux, really.

I think social media has some things that are similiar to social media, but foruns is somothing more especific, in social media you can create your own profile and talk about a topic, but there's also exist another pages of another things, but at foruns you used to talk just about one topic. In game foruns you'll probably mainly talk about games

On the other hand I'm not in favor of the government monitoring or limiting social media. That's for parents to do at best.

I prefer forums, social media is over-engineered to steal keep your attention so they can advertise to you more.
besides you get to remain anonymous on forums, that's more difficult on social media.

Yes and no... Really it's all in how you categorize them. What does a program like FB or TikTok have that a forum doesn't?

Online Community? Yes.
Real Time Communication? Somewhat, Forums tend to use Chat Functions to provide that.
Ability for users to engage with each other in ways beyond talking? Yes. Maybe not all forums have this, but AF does have a "Like"/"Dislike" system. Other forums could do the same or program something different.
App for Smartphone use? Depending on the Forum, it's possible. AF used to have one for a minute.
Ability to use videos? Well, FB and TikTok use their own video system. Whereas forums tend to use links to/for videos on other sites like YouTube.
Algorithms to manipulate what you see and possibly do? Forums have that to...
Ability to retroactively punish people for rules they've broken even though it's insanely late? I mean I could... -insert evil moderator laugh here.-

In truth, Forums are just the father/grandfather to what we have now with Social Media. Just in the same way the BBS Boards are the father to the Internet and Grandfather to Forums on the Internet.
