Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

*Looks around Anime Forum* I think somebody would have found pirate treasure here, if it weren't for us meddling kids. *looks at you* And our dog.

How? If you're doing it right you should have drained somebody else's life force to keep yourself healthy.

I wonder how true this is. Sure they may have families and responsibilities, but have they really stopped using social media on occasion? It's not as though people were using Anime Forum for hours on end in its heyday. Many would visit a few times a week, catch up on the threads, and maybe make a few posts.
I think the bigger factor here is the network effect. Basically when a network's value is improved by having more nodes, there is a tendency for people to migrate to the biggest network. Thus people are going to the biggest sites to discuss anime or any other topic for that matter. There is less value in posting on Anime Forum because few people are going to see it or reply to it.

I joined in 2007. This place used to have 6-20 forum members online simultaneously. It was active, but a lot of that activity was not necessarily on the forums themselves. A lot of people were messaging each other in DMs or in the chat rooms. People would make online friends with this site, and it might transfer over to some messaging app like MSN, Yahoo, Skype. A lot of the social media features (wall, likes, mentions) didn't exist when I joined.
There was a lot of discussing theories, ships, and favorite moments in the anime sections of the forums. I remember the Miscellaneous section always being fairly active. It's not just that Anime forum has changed, but everything else online. I felt like I could say what I wanted within reason, as long as I kept it civil. The community was small enough that you could develop an understanding of the more active members and you generally cared about not developing the reputation of a troll.
At the same time, people understood that others were going to post things they didn't like or strongly disagreed with, and that their only recourse was to reply with a rebuttal. You don't go crying to the mods demanding someone be banned for violating the TOS, or demanding the TOS change so that they would be banned. You didn't have as much people doxing or harassing other forum members they disliked. I could have amicable discussions with people I strongly disagree with on stuff.
I'm not sure when you joined since it looks like you created a new account. You might already know all this or perhaps were here but had a different experience. I figured PictureGuy might be asking about the heyday rather than 2018.
Somebody double-posted but I think that's allowed here. Especially since you're being active @Wio . It's great to see you!! And to know I'm not the only old AF geezer here!!

I've been active here since around 2006. I had a huge reputation as a troll. These days not so much. I'm old now and you live and learn. It was fun for a lonely guy to have a place to hang out, troll, and even make some decent friends along the way. Which I did a lot of both.
Edited because I can't formulate all of my thoughts. It's still early.

Ya' got 3 1/2 years on me, Ted. And you posted that years ago you used to be an AF troll? What types of trolly things did you do?
