Season 2 of Vinland Saga is available, so let the blood flow freely.
The second season starts off several years after season one ended. Thorfinn, the cold-hearted Viking warrior, is now a slave. How that came about we don’t know yet. Or at least through the first 16 episodes, we don’t know. There are 24 episodes, but only the first 16 are available on Netflix Streaming. One episode is added each week.
Back to Thorfinn, his spirit has been broken. Not by his new status as a slave, but rather from his guilt over the blood he has shed. Every night he has nightmares where he is confronted by his memories. But it is through a new found friendship with fellow slave Einar that Thorfinn comes out of his shell.
Meanwhile, the peace loving, milquetoast Prince Cnute has become King Cnute, ruler of England. Now he sets his eyes on his native Denmark hoping to consolidate the two countries. King Cnute is daring, and unscrupulous. He makes Machiavelli look tame by comparison. Is it destined that his path may cross with Thorfinn’s again?
There are several plots and sub-plots in a storyline which covers many years. If anything ties these story elements together, it is the lack of value put on human lives.
The artwork and animation shine. There is plenty of action – and blood-letting. The new characters are well defined, and Thorfinn’s character develops in several directions.
Netflix Streaming has eight more Vinland Saga episodes to post. I eagerly await them.
