Can an anime with a thin plot and cliché-filled storyline still be entertaining? Oddly, yes. Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya has a few things going against it. The story seems too familiar and predictable. Yet the 3D animation is great, and the character development suburb. I actually found this an interesting adventure series to watch.
Saint Seiya is a remake of an anime from the 1980’s. I haven’t seen the original, but a quick glimpse of an on-line article calls this an update. It involves the reincarnation of the goddess Athena in the form of a teenaged Sienna. Only this reincarnation is born with a prophecy that she will destroy mankind. Not that she wants to. Sienna would rather save mankind.
Enter Seiya, the Bronze Knight Pegasus, who with three other Bronze Knights swear to defend and protect Sienna. And there is a lot to protect her from. First, Sanctuary has turned against the reincarnated Athena sending first Silver and then Gold Knights to kill her. Then there is the villainous Guraad who develops his own army of Black Knights, taking it upon himself to save mankind by destroying all the gods. Add to this a continuous series of battle in which the Bronze Knights go up against stronger opponents.
It is a familiar formula. We’ve seen it before, but it is not always done so well. The action sequences are exciting to watch, as much for their artistic value as anything else. The characters are well defined; some serious effort went into that. All that, and a cliffhanger ending, makes me want to watch season 2 of Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya. Check it out.
