Bubble takes us into quite a different Tokyo. After a rain of bubbles, the laws of gravity seem altered. The city becomes abandoned, inhabited now only by teens and kids who organize into different gangs, competing in a dangerous game they call Battlekour, where they wager much needed supplies.

One of these gangs is Blue Blaze, and their ace is Hibiki. When Hibiki is saved from drowning by a strange, young girl, that girl is taken into Blue Blaze and named Uta. The relationship between Hibiki and Uta grows, but as it does, in this variation of The Little Mermaid, Uta’s life could be endangered.

Bubble is a pretty exciting film to watch. The animation is outstanding, and not just the action sequences. There are a wide variety of characters with their own individualistic personalities, mannerisms, and eccentricities.

Bubble is directed by Tetsuro Araki, who previously worked on the anime series Attack on Titan, Black Lagoon, and Death Note. This movie is definitely a 180 degree turn from those anime. The script is by Gen Urobuchi, who also wrote Puella Magi Modoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, and the Godzilla anime trilogy I wrote about some time back.

It was produced by Warner Brothers – Japan and Netflix, so you can watch it on Netflix Streaming. Bubble does tug at the heartstrings, and will bring a tear to your eye. It is also entertaining, and not to be missed.
