Maybe I expected too much from Jujutsu Kaisen O. It’s just that when I go see an anime movie, I expect more than what I would get from an anime TV series. After all, the filmmakers have more resources and time available than if they were working on a series. Watching Jujutsu Kaisen O, I felt like I was watching an extra long episode of an anime series. When I saw that one of the characters was a giant talking panda, I knew I was in trouble.
The plot is pretty basic and elementary. High school kid Yuta becomes possessed by a Curse. He goes tp Jujutsu High to learn how to control it, under the tutelage of Satoru Gojo. Then the bad guy, Suguru Geto goes to war against Jujutsu High. That’s about it.
The last 20-30 minutes of the film is the battle between the good sorcerers against the bad ones. In all honesty, I must say that the animation of these battles is excellent. But as much effort as they put into the animation of the action scenes, that is how little effort was made animating the rest. As I indicated, most of the film’s animation was TV series quality. They also seemed to design the Curses on the cheap as well. Those characters looked like they belong in a bad Disney film.
Though the battle sequences were very well done, I pretty much lost interest in Jujutsu Kaisen O well before we get to those scenes. Mostly I blame the paper thin plot which started from nowhere and stayed there.
Interestingly enough, though the film was produced by Japan’s TOHO Animation, it was directed by South Korean animator Seong-Hu Park, who also directed the TV series on which the movie is based. But that’s the only thing of interest about Jujutsu Kaisen O. I can’t recommend this one.
