    Default Classic Anime

Q: Which anime are bona fide classics to you? Explain your feelings about them and why they hold a special place in your heart.

As you may know, Digimon is an all-time classic for me. I was nine in 1999 when I saw the first episode of the dubbed series on Fox Kids. It taught me things to value, like love, friendship, courage, sincerity, hope, light, knowledge, and reliability. Wait...

There are several I could list. But I will start with only two and come back later.

FLCL. This one is insanity for the sake of insanity. Forget the plot. FLCL is just a joy to watch. (Stay away from the two sequels.) Maybe the appeal is that we have one boy trying to cope with an insane world. Or maybe it's our introduction to The Pillows.

Boogiepop Phantom. Here is a narrative style few would be brave enough to attempt. Even the drab color scheme is appealing. BP is one of the darkest anime series around, and I like it dark. This one take an effort to watch, which is another reason I like it. As with FLCL, multiple watchings are required.

No subs, but you get the idea.

    I'll come back to this.

Jackie Coogan, Charlie Chaplin, and Charles Reisner as the Bully.

Reisner was a former pro boxer who turned actor, writer, and director. He previously worked for Chaplin behind the camera on The Gold Rush. Reisner would later become known as a comedy director working with The Marx Brothers, Jack Benny, and Abbot and Costello, among others.

Let me add two more classics from the dark side.

Monster is the story of Kenzo Tenma, a Japanese surgeon working in Germany. Tenma saves the life of a young boy named Johan, who has been shot in the head. Years later, Johan returns as a psychopathic killer and a master of manipulation. After Tenma is accused of a crime committed by Johan, he goes on the run throughout the cesspools of Europe searching for the real killer, while all the time being chased by a determined Inspector Lunge.

Next is Perfect Blue, directed by the late Satoshi Kon. Some time back on a thread for Halloween anime, I recommended this one. It's a classic mind-f*ck. (Pardon my vocabulary, but it is the best description I can come up with.) Mima is the lead singer of an all girl pop trio. She quits the group to pursue a career as an actress. As others take control of her life, Mima undergoes a change in her public image. Not all her fans appreciate the change, and someone is willing to kill to stop her. Is it Mima herself? Watch as Mima says sayonara to her sanity.

Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

For me, Sailor Moon, it was the very first anime I got absolutely obsessed with since I was like 6 yrs old when I first saw it, in Spanish latin dub at home in Mexico in the early nineties.
That version of Sailor Moon always brings me good memories of my childhood.
For that same matter, Candy Candy is also a favorite.
And of course another favorite is Ranma 1/2 because I since I was a kid I dreamt of being a dojo master and a martial arts expert.
