The credits for Eden are quite interesting. It is created, produced, and co-written by Justin Leach, an American now working in Japan. The other co-writer is Kimiko Ueno, whose other work varies from Space Dandy to Carole and Tuesday. The director is Yasuhiro Irie, who also directed episodes of Soul Eater and both Fullmetal Alchemist series. That’s quite an interesting pedigree.

It’s been 1000 years since humans lived on Earth. The planet is now being cared for by robots. Two robots find a toddler named Sara, who seems to be the only human on the planet. Where did she come from? Against their better judgement, the robots become parents to Sara. But since harboring a human could get them reprogrammed, they go to hide out with a group of rebel robots who don’t think humans are so bad.

So Sara grows into a headstrong and somewhat rebellious teen. She pushes back against the rules which were put in place to protect her from the other robots. She also finds out that only she can save the human race.

This is a short series; only four episodes. I assume that gave the animators extra time to do their work, because the animation is superb. Movements flow naturally. This is way better than most other anime series.

It’s also a good story. The main characters are well developed, with Sara being especially believable. Sara may well become your new favorite heroine.

The series is suitable for all ages. There is some robot on robot violence, and Sara does look death in the face one or two times. But I don’t think this will scar any young children.

Eden can be seen on Netflix Streaming.
