For about 50 years, George Hurrell worked as a portrait photographer, primarily in Hollywood. He would shoot his subjects without make-up, and then would retouch the prints. A master of light and shadow, Hurrell often portrayed his subjects in a manner different from their public persona. One of the leading photographers of the last century, Hurrell supposedly considered himself a failure because he never gained success as a painter.
