Default How can I learn about basic computers and technology?

Hello, I'm an 18-year-old guy who knows next to nothing about computers. I did not get a phone until I was 16 and bought a computer a few months ago. I can email, browse the web, and that's about it. I had to call my friend to help clear storage on my hard drive. I think my lack of computer knowledge will cripple me in college and the job market. Do you guys know any YouTubers or books where I can learn all I need to know about computers? My dream would be to master all the way up to like basic coding. If you guys could give me anything I would appreciate it.

free information is usually unstructured and difficult to digest. look for paid courses if you have money

I would recommend enrolling in computer courses. This will be a good way to find out what is really necessary and important. When you learn to work on a computer, you can take programming courses. Just choose a beginner's course to be taught the basic skills. Then you can do it at a more advanced level.

I recommend computer science Harvard courses. There you can learn how to program and define what computer science is in general.

Hi, so what is (or are) your real goals here?
1.) Are you looking to find materials geared more towards understanding how computers work in general so you can take care of yours? Are you more interested in hardware, software, or both? Are you looking for stuff like managing drive space, installing/uninstalling apps, anti-malware apps, best practices/tools you can use for managing passwords, etc.?
2.) Are you looking to learn applications that you're likely to need in the workplace, e.g. Outlook/O365, to help with prospects for getting a job since a lot of places are office jobs are remote?
3.) You also mention learning to code, but your goal there isn't really clear either. Do you want to learn to build websites? Video or PC games? Mobile applications? Doing analysis with data?

I can help find some resources, but I think it'd help you out to prioritize what you want to do first, and any other details you can think of. My two cents is you're listing out stuff that can take years to learn if you want to go into depth on all of those topics. I say that as someone who started out kinda IT dumb and went and got some formal education on it.

To some other people's points, looking up for stuff for #1 on YouTube should be easy. I know local libraries in my area also have free courses for #2. For #3, you can find sources on general programming concepts, but you'll probably reach a point where you want to learn specific languages/focus on one thing at a time.

For #1, the scope might be more than you want, but looking for learning materials for the CompTIA A+ exam will give you both hardware and some networking. Some of Messer's training might be worth looking at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCke...Z9PLsoGRtml2FQ
If I remember right, this doesn't focus as much on managing your operating system, but you could probably just search YouTube for "Windows 10 beginner guide" or "Mac beginner guide" and find good resources.

For #1 and #2, you may want to check out Khan Academy:
    https://www.khanacademy.org/computing
    https://www.khanacademy.org/computin...d-the-internet

This might be a good general resource for #3: https://www.reddit.com/r/learnprogramming/
    Stack Overflow will help tons.
If you want to go the Microsoft-stack route and learning about Cloud services, they have lots of learning modules: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/
If you wanna learn .NET (and probably C#): https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvt...8dq5Wwfu6B0oxw
There's a bunch of courses on Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/browse/computer-science
Lynda's good too if you can use it through a library.

I guess it's also possible with learning manuals of devices.

As mentioned above. I'd approach the subject with Youtube Videos. A lot of them are explained to a good degree of details, plus you get to see what's going on, etc.

LinusTechTips, Jay2Cents (?, I guess.. can't remember.. whatever )... there are many vids teaching a lot of cool stuff. Specially about hardware.

For example I didn't know what the VRM was... I mean I knew it consisted of those components around the chipset, but I didn't know what it was for... then I learned that it's connected to the MOSFETs among other things, etc, and basically it's supposed to micro adjust voltage/etc to the chipset... but then it gets hot... etc.

But yeah... I got that from Linus.

if you want to generally learn about computers just watch a youtube introduction to computers course, I recommend you focus on the main components such as ram, processors, memory and IO to get an idea of what computers are.

if you want something more related to computer science I strongly recommend taking CS50 course, you can find it on youtube or udemy.

Mm. I live on my computer.

Back in the days of Windows XP, the Control Panel was colorful and neatly categorized.

Now, with Windows 10. It's ugly and meant to be uniform with tablets and phones.

So yeah. I would recommend going through your computer and just opening random stuff and googling it. Start with the lower right corner of your screen with all of the icons. Right-click each of them and see the options. You should find one for Wi-Fi, sound, display settings, third-party stuff.

After going through the right-hand corner, go through the Control Panel. Just keep exploring and reading and going at it.

And maybe your curiosity will land you somewhere that gathers more curiousity.

Hi! This may be a late reply (and possibly a bump) but it's pretty hard to get into computer science without a course but this is how I got into it,

Started with Harvard's CS50 and did all the problem sets.

Moved over to using GitHub and learning to collaborate with other people.

Switch to Linux and started making my own things with what I learnt that I actually use.

Started learning about computational thinking and better program structures from MIT's OCW.

Now binging 35GB of PDFs from the Gentoomen Library. Check out https://g.sicp.me/books/
