Anime Sidekicks

I am going to revive a dearly departed thread on anime sidekicks. Who are your favorites? Since we have some newbies just joining, I thought I’d post a revised list, and see if they, or anyone else, would like to contribute. No special order.

Miko from Kill la Kill. Since sullen Ryoko is out for revenge, she needs a sidekick for moral support. Enter Miko, who needs to calm down a ton in order to be hyperactive. Cute little Miko is the real heart and soul of the series, while Ryoko is certainly the heroine. It is Miko who sets the pace – insanely.

Krillin from the Dragon Ball series. Which series? All of them. Thanks to Master Roshi’s training, Krillin grows from a pipsqueak little boy to the strongest human in the world. Unfortunately, being the strongest human in the world really does not count for much compared to the Saiyans, Namekians, and assorted androids. So Krillin is regulated to being a sidekick, primarily to Goku. Except for a brief moment on Planet Namek, it is always someone else who takes the lead while Krillin faithfully provides support.

Shiro from No Game, No Life. Shiro may look like nothing more than a young girl, but she is a deadly serious and effective gamer. But it is older brother Sora who is the master of strategy, so Shiro plays second fiddle, always ready to support big brother. Sure there are times when Shiro takes the lead, but only when it is part of Sora’s strategy.

Al from Full Metal Alchemist. FMA and FMA Brotherhood both. Al is a talented alchemist himself, and has that cool suit of armor. But brother Ed is a better alchemist, and he has automail. This should have been a partnership, but Ed is the real star. Al is just the sidekick who keeps things level.

Saber from the Fate series. Aka King Arthur, with a bit of gender bending, Saber is a formable fighter, but she always has to serve a master. The master drives the story. Saber just takes out his enemies. But she is faithful to the core, and stands by her man – as if she had a choice.

Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop. An ex-cop turned bounty hunter, Jet is as hard and tough as a man can get. But partner Spike is the real star. Most storylines and plot developments rotate around Spike, so Jet is there to back him up, give encouragement, hassle about making money. Jet is always at Spike’s side.

Welf and Lilly from Dan Machi. Lilly can apparently carry many times her body weight in supplies while Welf is capable of producing magic weapons.

Despite the title for this clip, it is not from Dragon Ball Z. It is from the original Dragon Ball. No letter at the end. Here Krillin meets Goku, and embarks on a career as a sidekick.

From FMA Brotherhood, Al is the ultimate backup for brother Ed:



Unfortunately, after this Al learned he was to get the part of the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz remake. His movie career ends before it begins.

How could I forget Mei, Hazuki, and Yayoi from Mouse?

Sorata is a mousy assistant art teacher at an all girls school, while Mei, Hazuki, and Yayoi are senior faculty members who give Sorata a hard time. But at night, Sorata become the daring master thief Mouse, and Mei, Hazuki, and Yayoi become his obedient assistance willing to do anything their master asks for -- or does not ask for.

From Fate/Stay-Night, Saber is always there for her master. Though this is as close as they get. At least as far as I can remember.

I just thought of another sidekick. It's Mimi from Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne.

Rin is a nearsighted, green-haired, alcoholic, lesbian private detective, with a killer body who is also immortal. Who else to be her sidekick than a cute girl who is also an alcoholic lesbian.

Most? Maybe a quarter. Plus he's dead so if there's ever a sequel, he won't be in it. Lots of DBZ stories revolve around Vegeta, that doesn't make him the star of the show.


Anywho there are lots of sidekicks in anime. It's hard to pick. The sidekick on Gurren Lagen ended up taking over the whole show.


Do Tuxedo mask and the rest of the Scouts qualify as sidekicks or not?







I'm impressed that in Bleach they turned all of the Espada into sidekicks.

OK then, Spike is Jet's sidekick. And Goku is Krillen's sidekick. In FMA, Ed is Winry's sidekick.

Do you even know what a sidekick is? I can explain it to you if you don't.

To be fair Krillin does seem to do most of the actual adventuring and thinking before Goku shows up... and Ed does let Winry boss him around.

And Jet does more thinking than Spike? Nope. Spike usually has the last say in what jobs they go after.

Yeah, but I think Faye and Ed are the more heroic types. They act on their own and frankly the other two usually end up caving.

If we consider Killua a sidekick, he’s my favourite of course. But I normally see the four of them with Gon, Kurapika and Leorio as the entire anime.
