Go forward a few pages, and you will find a review of the anime series Violet Evergarden. It’s the bitter-sweet story of an orphan trained to be a killing machine in a war. But when the war was over, alone in the world with no purpose, Violet gets a job as an Auto-Memory Doll, that is someone who write letters for those who cannot express themselves. And it is in this new life that Violet gets in touch with her humanity and learns about human emotions.

Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto-Memory Doll is the first movie to come out based on the series. A second is due out this year. Violet gets an unusual assignment. She has three months to teach the daughter of an aristocratic family on how to be a debutant. But this girl has some secrets in her past which haunt her and pain her. Still the two become friends. In the second half of the movie, Violet gets the opportunity to befriend her student’s long lost little sister, but details would be a spoiler for the first half. So let’s leave it at that.

In most aspects, Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto-Memory Doll falls short of the series. Odd since movies generally have more time and resources available. But still, there is a tender, heartwarming, tear-jerking story which draws in the audience and charms them. You should probably catch the series first, but certainly Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto-Memory Doll should not be missed.
