Is anyone here familiar with duckduckgo.com? It's supposed to be a search engine like Google, only unlike Google it does not gather, store, or sell your personal information. Have you used it? Is it as advertised?

I don't really know much about it. All I know is that at my mom's house they have it as their default search, but say they have no idea how that happened, so I was leery for a while that it was something bad that they installed or something - but I realized later it could have been they installed something that had one of those sneaky check boxes that changed it. I didn't know it was supposed to be that good though. I will have to look into it.
I'm not much of a techie, so if you find out anything, let us know.

And it's security and privacy claims are true and accurate?

I would recommend DuckDuckGo as far as for keeping your data yours, unlike Google.
If you're concerned about security you can also use Tor Browser although this will require a bit more setup to keep you fully secure. You still would not want to do anything illegal. Countries with severe restrictions on what they browse tend to use this browser since you can set a proxy to allow you to view sites outside of your country location restrictions.
I've been using Duckduckgo. It does not quite live up to Google's quality, but for the extra security, I don't mind. I still use Google if I need a map.

Yeah I'd rely more on Google Maps than anything else.
I once used Apple Maps to travel from Butte, MT to Yellowstone National Park. It should've only taken 3 hours, but Apple Maps took us the long way and it took 6 hours. Had to sleep in the parking lot of Old Faithful.
Sure, DuckDuckGo is probably one of the most popular search engines that does not track your history and follow you on any sites you are visiting. Its DuckDuck Bot web crawler helps to find the most relevant and best results. Unlike Google bot, the latter takes only 0.37% of the market. See more about the topic here https://litslink.com/blog/what-is-a-web-crawler-and-how-does-it-work. This article may be useful if you did not know how search engine bots work.
