Toward the Terra (1980)

No, this is not the anime series. This is the vintage anime movie on which the series is based. I guess we can call it vintage. It is 40 years old.

Toward the Terra is set in the future after mankind has pretty much destroyed Earth. I guess it takes place around 2025 or so. Anyway, the human race now exists in space waiting for the planet to naturally heal. But the race is divided between regular humans, and a telekinetic group called the Mu. Fourteen year old Jomy thinks he’s human, until he develops psychic powers, and for the next 20 years leads the Mu as they clash with the rest of humanity in a bloody, deadly war. Oh, and there’s this computer called Grandmother controlling everything.

The animation is a generation or two behind what we see today. The story is somewhat formulaic. But overall, Toward the Terra still works and gives us an entertaining two hours. There are various little sub-plots, one on one relationships, and some good character development.

Will mankind survive to return to Earth? Is Toward the Terra a sign of things to come? Watch the movie.
