This sort of overlaps with Clayton's thread on characters you can't tell are male or female. But here I am dealing with genuine gender bending. This is not a top 10 list or even a top 5 because quite frankly not all of these are all that great. Or gender bending is just a small part of a sub-plot. So add your's to the list, and maybe I will remember a good one I forgot about. Then we can do a top 5 or top 10 list.
Birdy the Mighty. Alien cop Birdy accidentally kills Earth teenager Tsutomu, so until his body can be repaired using alien medical technology, they have to share the same body. Not a bad series.
Maid Sama. I am not even half way through this series, so I can't say yet whether I like it or not. I can't say yet if Aoi, a boy who likes to dress as a girl, will be an important sub-plot or not. Stay tuned.
Le Chevalier D'Eon. Now we're talking! This swashbuckler series is about an 18th century French nobleman who joins the secret police to find his sister's killer. When needed, sis takes over her brother's body. The main character is based on a real life nobleman who lived as a woman.
I, Me, My. Strawberry Eggs. This is a pretty good comedy about a phys ed teacher who must pass as a woman to get a job at an all girls school.
Back Street Girls. Three yakuza screw up, and as punishment must get sex change operations and make money for the family by being an all-girl pop singing group. They are cute girls on the outside, but still yakuza thugs on the inside. Actually, this series sucks eggs big time.
Ouran High School Host Club. Our heroine, sweet Haruhi, must pass as a guy.
Then there is Hansel and Gretel from Black Lagoon, but they are only in two episodes. So BL does not count.
