So are there any animes where you saw a character and just could not tell if it was a boy or a girl?

Anime is a lot like sex. Done right it's a beautiful act of creation that brings a little more light into the world. If it's sick and wrong... it's even better.

I'm STILL confused about Ed from Cowboy Bebop... (Though I do know it's a girl)
Also second about Nagisa from Assassination classroom.
There have been other minor characters in anime too. Haku from Naruto for example.
Don't forget Orochimaru and his kid...

Did you know Gyarados from Pokémon is actually a girl?!
Just kidding. lol
My Wi-Fi, it's gone out . . .
Yuzuru from A Silent Voice. When she first makes her appearance, she is mistaken for Shouko's younger boyfriend. She is actually her younger sister. Funny, huh?

Mariaholic is all about that. I believe the anime term is "trap" https://i.redd.it/35etstwvne131.jpg
The question is, does it matter?

I am currently watching Maid Sama.

Do cross-dressers count? I'm thinking of Hansel and Gretel from Black Lagoon. Once they change clothes, you can't tell one from the other.

Clayton-n, you really need to start posting smaller pictures. It's hard viewing the whole thing.
As far as cross-dressers go, I could mention D'Eon de Beaumont from Le Chevalier D'Eon. But he is unmistakably male when he is himself, and unmistakably female when possessed by the ghost of his murdered sister -- at least to the viewer.
As far as not being able to tell female from male, there is this character from Papawa Island:
She's female. The fishnet fish I am not too sure of.
Any volunteers to start a gender bender anime thread?

Keep in mind, if you look for it, you'll find an opposite gender version of pretty much every anime character. Especially if you know about a guy named Shadman.
To be fair, still better looking that the original version.

This character from Maid Sama is constantly being mistaken for a girl. The hair and dress doesn't help him much.

Cutemon from Digimon Xros Wars/Fusion is a male. I was stunned.
My Wi-Fi, it's gone out . . .
I thought Digimon weren't supposed to have gender... *Snicker*

They regress to eggs when they die and get reborn.

THe merc from Hellsing got me... it was mostly the braid

There are a lot of One Piece characters who fall into this category
Oh and Grell, but that's intentional
And of course from Soul Eater...

I was wondering why Crona from Soul Eater was wearing a dress although he was a boy. I think it may have actually been his coat.
What do you think?
