    Angry Enter the Anime (2019)

    I refer to this film as a “jokeumentary.” No it is not funny, at least not intentionally. It’s just a poor excuse for a documentary of any kind.

    With Enter the Anime, director Alex Burunova says she is trying to find the essence of anime. What makes it popular, and what drives the creators. Except for a brief two minutes when we learn on how Toei Animation was created, we get a 58 minute commercial for Netflix. Netflix produced this film, and all the anime series featured are currently licensed for streaming by Netflix. Not that the series are not any good. There are some great anime series on Netflix streaming. But Enter the Anime is a lame attempt to push their product. This is obvious. Who does Netflix think they are fooling?

    Still, I will remain a Netflix customer. Their streaming not only offers some exclusive anime, but also a good selection of foreign films and TV series.

    But watching Enter the Anime is a waste of time.

    I'm still pissed at Netflix for stealing the rights to The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K. away from Funimation and refusing to dub season 2. (Not at all to get in a sub vs dub debate, I watch both, but particularly in this series, there are quite often more than one person speaking at once, making the subs really hard to keep up with.)

    Now, now. Let's forgive and forget. Is it that important whether you have to read sub-titles? It is an acquired skill, but it gives you the emotions of the original voice actors.

    I didn't care for Saiki K. myself. It had possibilities, but I thought it did not live up to its promise. But it is off-beat enough where I can see there would be a strong, loyal cult following. (Using cult in a positive way.)

    Point taken. Like I said I don't mind subs in general. The other thing is wither I start something dubbed or subbed, I have a really hard time switching. I just feel like this was about greed. But I digress. Sorry for hijacking your topic. ^^

    Well, I've hijacked a few topics myself.

    But have you ever watched an anime in English and then switched to the Japanese with subs just out of curiosity on how the original actors sounded? Generally, series I watch in English and movies in the original with subs.

    I have a few times, but usually I just stick with whatever I've heard first. I remember when FMA: Brotherhood came out, I was so excited, and ready to watch subs, but after 2-3 eps, I couldn't get used to it and ended up waiting for the dub.


    But on the flip side, there are a few favorite animes of mine that still have never been dubbed, and if they ever are, I wouln't watch them, or at least not likely more than an episode.


    (btw, I'm weird. ^^)

    Have you ever seen Boogiepop Phantom? You have to watch this series multiple times. I watched it both in English and in Japanese with subs. Each version gives a slightly different perspective. Both give details the other leaves out. It was the only way to make sense of the story.
