Lame thread title, I know.
The intended purpose of this thread is for people of all levels of Japanese to come together and share information that they've recently discovered.
This may be something that is only new to them, something that makes perfect sense but has never been looked at in a certain way before, or something entirely uncommon.
I feel that this thread would be most beneficial to lyric translators, but anyone is welcome to participate.
Such information might be :
* words and/or their readings
* word stems
* phrases
* proverbs
As an example, I was lost for a long time on the word "ストレート" until bluepenguin also encountered this and was able to ascertain that it, in fact, appears to be a boxing term to describe a type of punch or jab.
Another example is in the line "悔い改む心が無ければ この雨さえ罪は禊げぬ".
I was already aware of "禊", which can be both a noun or a suru-verb.
Maybe it's because I don't come across the word that often, but I'd never seen it in the "禊ぐ" form to mean the same as "禊をする".
Furthermore, the theme of the album that it is featured on feels very European.
In this case, the meaning can probably be taken to imply simply "...(won't) wash away my sins" or more religiously "...(won't) sanctify my sins".
