Japanese Dub Only Anime

In the debate between the original Japanese dub or a translation, I think most anime fans would prefer their own language. But there are exceptions.

So, what anime series or movies did you feel are better watched in the original dub rather than your native language.

Me first!

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad. This is the coming of age story of Koyuki, a young Japanese schoolboy who finds meaning in his life when he learns to play the guitar and joins a rock band. It makes no sense to watch this series in the English dub, because there are American characters who speak English. When someone says something in English to Koyuki and he asks, in English, for someone to translate, it is very unintentionally funny. It is best to watch this only with the Japanese dub and sub-titles.

Boogiepop Phantom. Not really, totally what I had in mind for this thread, but I recommend watching both the original Japanese dub with subtitles, and the English dub. This can be a very confusing series, being that episodes and events in each episode, are not in chronological order. It requires several views, but is worth it. There are aspects of the story which do not come out well in the English translation, but there are other aspects which the English translation brings out more than the Japanese. What one dub misses, the other picks up on.

There are a few exceptions, but for the most part, I only watch a show subbed OR dubbed, usually not both.

It just depends on what you are looking for. Dubs these days seem to be a lot more faithful to the subs, but I'm sure not always.

For me it's... I feel like I can't focus on subs. - I still watch subs sometimes, If I really wanna watch a show that's not dubbed. But it takes longer.

What I can say is, one of my favorite animes, I actually hope is never dubbed - which is not something I say often, but, it's Yakitate!! Japan, and the entire show is built around Japanese puns. Even the title: It's a show about baking bread, and Asuma Kazuma wants to make "Japan!" Much like there is German bread, French Bread, and English bread. But in the Japanese language, the word for bread is "Pan". So by calling his bread "Japan" He's essentially calling it "Ja-bread." - But this is just the title. The whole show, every episode has at least one pun. The subs I saw had to explain at the top what they all meant. Wouldn't ever want to see it translated.

One show I did watch subbed and dubbed was "The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K." Not really by choice, but, because STUPID NETFLIX bought the rights to season 2, and then refused to dub it... The thing about Saiki K is, there is a lot going on fast, and they talk really fast, and sometimes two conversations going on at once. I had to watch sub because I wanted to see it, but with Saiki it really is easier to enjoy dubbed, since you have to keep track of less.


If you ever need a laugh, and aren't easily offended, look up the dub of Ghost stories. Maybe one of the worst anime's ever, dubbers got a hold of it, and were told to do whatever they wanted. ... Maybe that was a mistake? But it's funny. XD


Unpopular Opinion incoming:

You get into shows like Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh! and, you hear all about how much the dub butchered them. And - In all fairness they really did - The first two seasons of Digimon at least, they did a little better with Tamers - But I have watched Digimon subbed now and... While overall the story might be a tad bit better, but I don't think I would have enjoyed the overall tone at the age I watched it. I probably wouldn't have given it much of a chance. I prefer the dub's dumb jokes - though occasionally they do get a little too dumb, I still prefer them. As for Yu-Gi-Oh! ... I 'accidentally' watched one 'random' episode of that subbed and... I'm sorry I'll take "I'll win your puzzle" over "This is a puppet. If you lose, it will kill you. If you run, it will run faster. It won't stop till you're dead." ... No thank you.

I always watch them in Japanese first. When I see them in English, 99% of the time I can't stand how they sound. I get used to how the characters sound, and I hate that they next to never find a voice actor that sounds even remotely the same. It's always the same 1-2 voice people. (Christopher Sabat.. TINY RANT: Greedy P.OS. gives himself so many roles instead of finding real talent that can do more than one voice with minor variations...)

Now that you mention it, I do remember some subtitles from old anime seemingly incomplete. I used to watch each series twice, in English and in Japanese with subs, but that takes too long and I have a long Netflix list. But when I do watch anime with the original dub subtitled, those over the last 10-15 years I have no trouble following. Not everything can be translated, but the basic stories are clear.
